However, harvest of tissue biopsies from hoof lamellar tissue is a procedure with limitations due to lack of effective surgical instruments and techniques. The aim of the current study is to develop and test in vivo a surgical instrument with the specific purpose of harvesting lamellar tissue in cattle. A prototype called Falcão-Faleiros’ lamellotome (INPIBR102013018765-8) was designed, produced and tested. After sedation, five adult cattle were restrained in lateral recumbency and locally anesthetized in two digits. The stratum corneum was worn down using a rotary tool coupled to a 3/8” high-speed cutter until the soft tissue proximity was reached. Next, the inner edge of the worn area was bounded with a scalpel. The lamellotome was introduced to obtain and hold the sample. The histological specimens of 16mm len...

Fourteen months after surgery, 32 samples of scar tissue were collected from four mares that had the members experimentally submitted to both surgical techniques. By macroscopy, the dimensions of the scar tissue of the proximal stump and the distance between nerve stumps were taken. By microscopy, the proportion of nervous tissues in the scar tissue was quantified by histomorphometry. There were no differences between the scar tissue dimensions, but the distance between stumps was 5.6-fold greater in ST subjects. Histologically, connective tissue, macrophages, and thin nervous fibers were observed in scar tissue present in animals of both groups. Nodular structures composed by nervous fascicules were visualized in 56.2% (9/16) of the samples collected from the ST group. The mean percentage of the nervous ...
The equine small colon is frequently affected by obstruction, and intestinal motility dysfunction... more The equine small colon is frequently affected by obstruction, and intestinal motility dysfunction is a common complication after its surgical treatment. This fact may be related to myoenteric plexus lesion caused by distention; however, little is known about the pathophysiology of this condition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological alterations in the myoenteric inervation of segments of small colon of horses subjected to intraluminal distension with reduction of the microvascular perfusion (partial ischemia) of the intestinal wall. Nine horses were used to promote distension of on segment of small colon for 4 hours. Samples of intestinal wall were collected before and at the end of the distension, after 1.5 and 12 hours of reperfusion in the experimental segment and at the end of the procedure in a different distant segment. Samples were processed and histological sections were stained with cresyl violet for the morphometric studies. An image analyzer softw...

Despite intensive care, worsening of the clinical signs occurred during the first 24 hours after surgery including pain, enterogastric reflux and grievance of the endotoxemia symptoms. Euthanasia was performed. During necropsy, no signs of failure of the anastomosis and peritonitis were found but a strangulated segment of jejunum was observed adjacent to the cecocolic fold and compressed by the body of the cecum and the reminiscent rigth ventral colon. This finding was associated with the worsening of the clinical signs during the post-operative period. This report indicates that an adaptation in the large colon resection technique reducing the cecocolic space may be beneficial in avoiding such complication.

This study is part of a proposal for development of a low-cost and easy-to-use polymeric interlocking nail designed to be used in newborns and young cattle. The objectives were to evaluate, in vivo, polyacetal and polyamide nails for immobilization of femoral fractures in calves. Five calves were submitted to general anesthesia and the left femur was fractured and then fixed using polyacetal or polyamide rods (nails) interlocked with four cortical screws (stainless steel) equally applied to the distal and proximal fracture line. In the postoperative period, calves were clinically assessed during 60 days by clinical and radiographic exams. Fractures occurred in four of the five polyacetal nails implanted in the first time and in two of the four polyamide nails implanted after the polyacetal nail failures. All failures occurred in the first 14 days after implantation. No rejection signs against the polymers were observed. In conclusion, polyacetal and polyamide did not have enough resistance to be used as intramedullary interlocking nails in this system designed to promote early femoral fractures immobilization in young calves.
