Symptoms of the disease comprise of fever, tiredness, dry cough, aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, diarrhoea and pneumonia at the late stage. SARS-CoV-2 has severely crippled the healthcare system and has caused huge economic losses. Following the outbreak, the SARS-CoV-2 was recognized timely and its genome was sequenced, leading to the development of real-time polymerase chain reaction assays for its detection in clinical samples collected from suspected cases. The management of the pandemic is limited by a number of misconceptions and insufficient information about laboratory testing for SARS-CoV-2 to confirm the disease. This includes a lack of awareness about procedures for the collection, transport, testing, and handling of biological samples for COVID diagnosis. This ...

The patients are usually asymptomatic or present with mild non specific abdominal symptoms and malnutrition with a low Ascaridial load. The patients having high worm load can present with intestinal obstruction which could sometimes be managed conservatively. Small gut volvulus is a less frequent but potentially dangerous complication of Ascaris infestation having high morbidity and mortality unless quick surgical intervention is done. Case Presentation: We present the case of a 4 year old male child who presented to the Emergency Room with the features of pain abdomen with distension, feculent vomitus, fever and a history of passage of worms in stools. X-ray abdomen showed multiple air fluid levels suggestive of Acute Intestinal Obstruction. The patient was subjected to exploratory laparotomy where the small gut was found to be full of Ascarides. There was a gangrenous ileal segment due to small gut volvulus. The gangrenous segment was resected and an end to endileo-ileal anastomosis was performed after evacuating all the worms. In the post operative period patient had an episode of bilious vomiting which contained mature worms. Patient was managed conservatively and was discharged home on 9 th post operative day, after antihelminthic treatment was given to him and his whole family. Conclusions: Intestinal obstruction is the most common complication of Ascariasis. Small gut volvulus is a rare presentation of this worm infestation which requires urgent surgery or else there is a risk of poor patient outcome. Post operative antihelminthic therapy of the whole family, repeated at frequent intervals is necessary since there is high incidence of re-infection. Public health measures like practise of proper hand hygiene, proper sanitation and management of the human waste are essential for prevention of worm infestation in the society.

The treatment of choice is emergency appendectomy. A delayed diagnosis and hence a delayed treatment increases the complication rate. Despite the best efforts negative appendectomy rate is still high since there is no single best test available to reach the diagnosis. Methods: This was an institutional study conducted at DRPGMC Tanda, comprising of 28 patients and 7 healthy controls. The patients with clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis were subjected to appendectomy after taking a blood sample for serum procalcitonin and performing an ultrasonogram of abdomen. Results: We observed that mean levels of procalcitonin (PCT) were significantly higher in patients of acute appendicitis in comparison to healthy controls. The range of PCT levels in group 2 i.e., patients with uncomplicated acute appendicitis were from 0.54 to 0.74 ng/ml with mean value of 0.61 ng/ml, whereas in group 3 i.e. patients with comp...

Therefore research needs to analyse emerging risk factors for CVDs. Bruxism is a health problem that has low prevalence in the community but may be associated with CVDs. It leads to poor oral health and significantly impacts the quality of life. Studies showing association of CVDs and Bruxism are sparse and, none in Indian context. Methods: This study was conducted in two hospitals of Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh between the months of April 2020 to June 2020. Due to rising infection rates of COVID-19 cases, 160 patients were enrolled in the study and divided into two groups. 80 patients with a positive history for CVD were included as cases while another 80 patients without any known history for CVD were included in the control group. Self-reporting questionnaire and tooth wear index (TWI) were used as research instruments. Results: An unadjusted odd’s ratio of 2.43 (95% CI, 1.28...

Antibiotic prophylaxis in elective cholecystectomy is a controversial issue and our study was undertaken to evaluate the rate of infection and the usefulness and efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis in elective cholecystectomies. Methods: The study comprised of 100 patients admitted for elective cholecystectomy. The first fifty patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy were given the prophylactic antibiotic outside the operation theater in the wards and the next fifty patients were given a single dose of injection cefuroxime (1.5 gm i.v). Results: In single dose antibiotic prophylaxis group 10.52% people developed surgical site infection in open cholecystectomy group while patients developed infection in laparoscopic cholecystectomy group but in multiple dose group 16.21% patients who underwent open cholecystectomy developed a surgical site infection w...

It can lead to increased chances of mortality/morbidity if any delay is made during diagnosis or active management. We report a case of electric current burn on left hand, forearm, arm and shoulder with perforation of sigmoid colon with successful management by primary closure.
