Introduction. The implementation of distance learning in vocational education and training (VET) ... more Introduction. The implementation of distance learning in vocational education and training (VET) is relatively new, with a clear increase in demand in recent years. In the Valencian Community there are 14 offers of vocational training in the health sector and 78.6% of them are also offered in the form of distance learning. The objective of this work was to determine if there are differences in the students' profile and academic performance between traditional and distance learning modes. Methods. A comparative cross-sectional observational study based on a frequency analysis was carried out. 82 students from the first year of Emergency Health Care were enrolled. A self-designed survey and student’s grades were used as measuring tools. Results. Students of the distance group were older, with an active work situation, worse availability, more responsibilities, greater interest in the studies and, therefore, greater motivation. However, students of the face-to-face modality were characterized by having fewer responsibilities, parents with a higher level of education, as well as a greater knowledge of languages. Finally, academic achievement of students enrolled in the face-to-face group was greater. Conclusion. Despite these results, both modalities provide quality training and it should be considered that the distance learning will become more important due to the characteristics of today's society together with the progress of information and communication technologies (ICTs).

We have previously demonstrated that ethanol up-regulates inflammatory mediators in both brain and astroglial cells. Since Rho GTPases are involved in inflammatory responses of astrocytes where loss of stress fibers takes place and RhoE/Rnd3 disorganizes the actin cytoskeleton, the aim of the present study was to investigate the implication of this protein in the stimulation of inflammatory signaling induced by ethanol. Our findings show that RhoE expression induces a decrease in both RhoA and Rac. In addition, RhoE not only induces actin cytoskeleton disorganization but it also stimulates both the IRAK/ERK/NF-kappaB pathway and the COX-2 expression associated with the inflammatory response in these cells. Our results also show that ethanol exposure induces RhoE signaling in astrocytes. Preincubation of astrocytes with GF109203X, an inhibitor of PKCs, reduces the RhoE levels and abolishes the ethanol-induced activation of IRAK, NF-kappaB and the COX-2 expression. Furthermore, RhoE overexpression restores ethanol responses in astrocytes treated with the PKCs inhibitor. Altogether, our findings suggest that this small GTPase is involved in the stimulation of the inflammatory signaling induced by ethanol in astrocytes. These findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanism involved in the inflammatory responses in astrocytes.

Method: To carry out this work, a review was made of the official websites of the European Commission, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency of the United Kingdom. Bibliographic searches were also conducted on Pubmed and the internet (Google), using terms such as "withdrawal of the Mutual Recognition Agreement of Swiss European Union medical device conformity certificates, new UK medical device regulation", for a period extending from January 2020 to December 2021. Results: As a result of the disappearance of the legal framework that supported free trade between Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the European Union, products that used to be unrestrictedly distributed in Europe have become imports having to comply with the relevant legal requirements. Distributors for their part have become importers, and declarations of conformity and CE certificates have lost their validity. Furthermore, notified bodies from Switzerland and the United Kingdom are no longer recognized by the European Commission. Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the European Union have had to grant grace periods to allow regulatory agencies and economic operators to adapt to the new situation. Conclusions: The transition period toward the new economic scenario has not yet ended. Both Switzerland and the United Kingdom have had to take stronger measures than the EU to adapt to the changes. Both Switzerland and the United Kingdom are expected to finally incorporate the requirements of the new Regulation in their internal legal systems.
