Economic indicators were based on a gross margin analysis, commercialization strategies, and provision of employment. Social indicators were education level, family size, origin of laborers, plot size providing a measure of equity, and social self-organization. Environmental indicators were soil nutrient content and fertilizer application, technological management, and crop and natural biodiversity. Information on relevant social, technological, and economic elements was obtained through structured interviews with 100 producers of the city's nopalproducing zone of Milpa Alta in the hills southeast of Mexico City. Mice have been used extensively for studying normal prostate development and for generation of tr... more Mice have been used extensively for studying normal prostate development and for generation of transgenic or knock-out prostate cancer animal models. To understand systematically and thoroughly the androgen responsive program in the mouse prostate, we carried out microarray analysis to profile gene expression changes during prostate involution and re-growth triggered by castration and subsequent hormone replacement. Genes with significant changes in these two processes were identified and gene ontology analyses revealed that they were mainly involved in response mechanisms, cell adhesion, metabolism, protein metabolism, and cell-cycle progression. The changes observed during prostate involution were largely reversed during re-growth. Sixty-four genes, including Nkx3.1 and probasin, and 65 other genes, including insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 and H-cadherin (H-Cad), were further identified respectively as androgen-responsive genes and genes inversely correlated with androgen, based on their down- or up-regulation following castration and up- or down-regulation following androgen replacement. Potential androgen-responsive elements were found in the 5' upstream promoter region of 47 of those 65 genes, suggesting a potential suppression mechanism by androgen receptor. Of these, the role of H-Cad in tumorigenesis was further evaluated. Reduction of H-Cad transcript level was found in the majority of human prostate cancer cell lines and prostatic adenocarcinoma samples examined. Furthermore, induced H-Cad expression in DU145 cells, and knock-down of H-Cad expression in BPH1 cells inhibited and facilitated tumorigenicity, respectively. Taken together, our study provides a molecular understanding of the mouse prostate involution and re-growth processes and identifies a set of genes that are inversely correlated with androgen and may be potentially suppressive for tumorigenesis.

Tumor cells interact with the bone microenvironment to induce osteoclastogenesis via local bone stromal expression of receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL), leading to bone destruction and release of growth factors. In addition to its critical role in tumor-induced osteolysis, RANKL has been demonstrated to enhance the invasive behavior of epithelial tumor cells that express RANK, and RANK over-expression in transgenic mice using the breast-specific MMTV promoter results in increased mammary carcinoma. This study assessed the expression of human RANK and its ligand (RANKL) in invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Methods: We studied a total of 57 IDC specimens. Antibodies against human RANK (AF683) and human RANKL (M366; Amgen) were used for immunohistochemistry (IHC) cell staining along with an isotype control. The specificity of the 2 antibodies was substantiated by IHC, flow cytometry and Western blot analysis of positive and negative control cells. In addition, for RANK, mass spectrometry/protein sequencing of immunoprecipitated proteins was performed. The intensity of IHC staining was scored on a semiquantitative scale (1=weak, 2=moderate, 3=intense) or a complex scale (sum of percentages of stained tumor cells x staining intensity (0-3)). Both lesions show a similar pattern of light and dark cells having filopodia and microvilli, an outer coat of finely granular matrix without well defined basal laminae, maculae adherentes and attachment sites, pinocytotic vesicles, cytoplasmic filaments and complex nuclear invaginations. These similarities suggest a common histogenesis and support the concept that the epithelioid sarcoma is derived from synovioblastic mesenchyme.

In a survey of directors of nursing services of 101 nursing homes, it was found that 17 homes sti... more In a survey of directors of nursing services of 101 nursing homes, it was found that 17 homes still used syringes to feed some of their frail residents. Three of these 17 facilities did not have easy access to speech pathologists, and the facility feeding the greatest number of residents by syringe did not use the services of a speech pathologist to assess swallowing. The practice of syringe feeding seems to be going out of favor, but until this practice is no longer used it is hoped that the recommendations in this article will increase the knowledge and awareness of professional nurses, who are often instrumental in coordinating the difficult and complex decision to syringe feed.
