Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

Based on a for-credit multimodal writing course co-taught by the lead authors, this text (itself a collaboration between the instructors and ten of our incarcerated students) unpacks the processes and practices through which communication is regulated by the institutional authority of the prison (collectively termed the Carceral Communication Framework, or CCF) and places them in conversation with the innovations demanded by the prison’s technological constraints. Contending that collaboration in a prison setting tactically subverts the CCF and provides agency to people who are systematically disenfranchised, we focus on two different dimensions of that process: collaborations between students and teachers and collaborations between the students themselves.

Analyses are given for standard, low alloy steels. A study conducted on fragmentation by the sparking of polymers in the vacuum spark is presented. Mass spectra of polymers obtained in the vacuum spark are compared to gas source spectra of the polymer pyrolysis products and to spectra of the monomer. Though only preliminary information was obtained, it appears that the existence of stable groups such as the benzene ring of styrene, influences the spectrum to a greater extent than the ability of the polymers to unzip. Accurate mass measurement, using a special photo-plate reader designed for the Air Force Materials Laboratory, has been investigated and is discussed. The variation of a proportionality constant in the expression relating mass to line position is shown to be relatively large as one progresses along the plate. Thus the need for reference lines very close to the line...

Attention is first given to types of accountability, and then, measurement problems are addressed, including measurement, objectives, and special education; norms; limitations of standardized tests for accountability and special education; and criterion referenced measures. Recommendations for proper use of standardized tests with exceptional children are also offered. Next, statistical problems in special education accountability are taken up. These include problems with multivariate and parametric methods, regression effects, and difference scores and the measurement of change. Other aspects focused on were special education accountability at the secondary level, accountability and current understanding of special education teacher characteristics and behavior, the potentially subversive effects which accountability may have on hard to assess objectives and theory development, and problems of attribu...

The paper concludes with a presentation of guidelines for developing and appraising mainstream evaluation reports, and the observation that problems related to the evaluation of mainstreaming programs are no...

And before we consider the problem in the military and political spheres it may be illuminating to look at some manifestations in the natural world. ‘Illuminating’ is indeed a suitable term for our first example, because it concerns fireflies; these have been discovered to flash their lights as sexual recognition signals, each species having its own characteristic sequence of flashes. It has further been established1 that female flies of the species photuris versicolor lure the males of other species by mimicking the recognition signals emitted by the females of those species. The unfortunate males, duped into thinking that they are homing on females of their own kind, are then caught and devoured.
