In this respect, the study attempts to answer the criticism against the functional translation approach, which presupposes that literature has no function. The study selects an extraordinary literary text to apply Nord's functional translation approach. Hence, the study applies the most distinctive contemporary translation theory on the most outstanding work done by the most distinguished representative of the modern Arabic novel. The study is composed of four chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion. Chapter one deals with the history of contemporary translation theory. Chapter two provides a review of Nord's functional model. Chapter three provides a literature review of translating modern Arabic literature into English.
