The Antidesma ghaesembilla Gaertn, locally known as “bugnai”, which is also found in Bohol, Philippines is believed to have medicinal properties. Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay (BSLA) of the ethanolic extract of Antidesma ghaesembilla Gaertn was conducted in order to determine whether this medicinal plant has potential pharmacological activities. Three extracts were prepared (decoction, ethanol extract, and mixture extract) at four concentrations of 1000 ppm, 500 ppm, 100 ppm, and 10 ppm in three replicates. The study showed 100% mortality of brine shrimp in all concentrations at six hours and 24 hours exposures in all extract preparations. Among the different types of extracts, the 50-50 ethanol extract had the most toxic concentration with less than 10 ppm toxic in both acute and chronic LC50 values. The result indicated potential bioactive component of the plant extract since it revealed cytotoxic activity against the brine shrimp...

The study of its mandible that is used in feeding of stem borer would help understand the mechanisms and variations that could affect the adaptation and modification affecting severity of infestation. In this study, the mandible of two population of stem borers, the yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas and the striped stemborer (Chilo suppressalis) in three rice varieties IR-66, Pioneer 77 and Bigante were used to analyze the adaptation with regards to mandible shape in relation to rice variety in the same geographical location using outline-based (elliptic Fourier) geometric morphometric (GM) analysis to determine the shape variations in the left and right mandible of two population of stem borers. Further, scatter plot method was used to illustrate variations in the shapes of the mandibles between populations. Results of t...

For this reason, a survey of anurans was conducted in Loboc Watershed, the forest reserve in the island. Different sampling techniques were used. Three transect lines was established and were positioned perpendicular to water bodies parallel to the existing trails. A 10x10 meter quadrat size was established along each transect line. A visual encounter technique was used along each established quadrat and identification was done using a field guide. Fifteen species of anurans were recorded. One species belongs to families Bufonidae ( Bufo marinus ) and Megophryidae ( Megophryis stejnegeri ); two to family Microhylidae ( Kalophrynus pleurostigma and Kaluola picta ); six families Ranidae ( Fejervarya cancrivora, Limnonectes leytensis , Limnonectes magnus , Platymantis guentheri , Playmantis corrugatus , and Rana grandocula ) and five Rhacophoridae ( Nyctixalus spinosus, Polypedates leucomystax leucomystax, Polypedates leucomystax quadrilineatus, Rhacophorus appendiculatus and Rhacoporus pardalis ). The disturbed nature of the area still recorded endemic and threatened species. This suggests that forests and critical habitats in the area need to be protected and conserved.
