The data collected were analyzed by using Fairclough’s and Van Dijk’s model of Critical Discourse analysis (CDA) and Theo Van Leeuwen’s framework of the representation of social actors. The findings show that the newspaper viewed the Out group social actors which were Indonesian government, Indonesian army and Indonesian military officers and In Group social actors which were Australian, Papuan activists and those who support Papuan conflict, in terms of assimilation, nomination and categorization, functionalization and identification, Impersonalization. These categorizations serve different purposes. Those which are related to the Out groups express a purpose to emphasize their brutality, superiority and dominance towards the indigenous Papuans. Metode pelaksanaan pelatihan ini adalah dengan pendampingan dan ceramah tentang konsep PTK yang dilakukan dengan daring menggunakan zoom, whatsapp, dan email. Berdasarkan hasil pendampingan, terdapat 6 proposal yang sudah di beri catatan dari Tim pelaksana untuk direvisi dan dikembalikan dalam waktu 1 minggu setelah pelaksanaan kegiatan. 29 peserta yang belum melakukan pendampingan proposalnya beri kesempatan untuk konsultasi melalui whatsapp atau email. The study examines the rebellion of an Arabic princess whose name is Sultana, who has a courage to fight against unfairness done by his father and most men in her country towards women. This study focuses on analysing the reasons of Sultana’s rebellions and her demands toward men in her family. The findings show that the reasons of Sultana’s rebellions are violence toward her female family members, woman marginalization and woman subordination. The demands for equality include equality between man and woman in rights and education.

The writer would like to find out the ideology presented by Sydney morning Herald through the lexical choices and syntactical features while reporting Indonesia Political news because it cannot be denied that Australia as the country where Sydney morning Herald was born, has some roles in the internal problem of Indonesia, therefore it is assumed that in reporting the news, this newspaper will be influenced by the situational context and socio historical context where and when the news were written. The data used in this research is the headline of the news about Papua Conflict started from 2006 until 2012. The writer used CDA as a tool to reveal these ideologies. From 9 articles analyzed, the result of the study showed that mostly, according to SMH, Australia looked at the conflict of Papua as the complex problems which involved not only the Indonesia government. SMH gives negative evaluation towards the conflict there. SMH sees that Australia supports that humans have freedom to choose their own will, therefore, the writer sees that Australia supports Papuans to fight for their independence. This is qualitative research in which to answer the research questions Fairclough’s CDA, Bybee’s, et al (1994) and Frawley’s (1992) concept of modality were used. From the 98 total data from SMH, this Australian newspaper, expresses both epistemic and deontic modal meaning in the same frequency which is 0,32% for the deontic meanings and 0,31 for epistemic meaning. In terms of lexical verbs expressing SMH employed 0,03% for deontic meaning and 0,72% for epistemic meaning. In terms of adverb, this Australian newspaper employed 0,01% for epistemic meanings but non for deontic meaning. As writing becomes the skill that the students have to master, it has become the main concern for lecturers including the elements of well-organized essay. One aspect which determines the students’ abiliy to construct good and well-organized essay is the use of DMs. They are lexical expressions which signal the relation of either contrast, implication, or elaboration between the interpretation of discourse segment 2 and the interpretation of discourse segment 1 (Fraser, 1998, p. 302). This qualitative research uses data collected from the essay of 23 students divided into 12 high grade (Hg) students and 11 low grade (Lg) students. There were 19 students as the subjects of the research. The test was constructed based on Davine’s five categories of critical thinking which are the students had to recognize the writer’s purpose (1 item), note special point of view (2 items), evaluate of the writer’s choice of language (1 item), evaluate the writer’s argument (1 item), and evaluate inferences (1 item). This research is aimed at identifying the manifestation of power and ideologies through modality ... more This research is aimed at identifying the manifestation of power and ideologies through modality choices used by SMH. This is qualitative research in which to answer the research questions Fairclough’s CDA, Bybee’s, et al (1994) and Frawley’s (1992) concept of modality were used. From the 98 total data from SMH, this Australian newspaper, expresses both epistemic and deontic modal meaning in the same frequency which is 0,32% for the deontic meanings and 0,31 for epistemic meaning. In terms of lexical verbs expressing SMH employed 0,03% for deontic meaning and 0,72% for epistemic meaning. In terms of adverb, this Australian newspaper employed 0,01% for epistemic meanings but non for deontic meaning. In terms of adjective, this newspaper employed 0,02% for epistemic meaning but none for deontic meaning and the last category is multi word units, this newspaper employed 0,04 % multi word units from the total 98 data.
