A filled pause such as um is a linguistic expression used to signal hesitation in its immediate context, with the primary function of bringing the listener‟s attention to a particular kind of linkage of the upcoming utterance with the immediate discourse context. In achieving the purpose of the study, a total of twenty five oral presentations in English based on different topics were collected and analysed. By using Clark and Tree‟s (2002) framework on the use of um , the study shows that the filled pause of um played different roles based on the speaker‟s thoughts on feelings of uncertainty. Furthermore, it is also used in almost all positions of utterances, and each of which brings specific meanings. An um is used at the initial position of an utterance to show readiness to open a new sentence, topic, or point o...

However, there are lacks previous studies that examined the women leaders’ language and how the word choices represent women leaders on Twitter. Thus, this study aims to find out Theresa May’s language on Twitter and how those word choices represent herself as a woman leader. The data are taken from the tweets on Theresa May’s Twitter account over the last six months of her leadership reign (from January until July 2019), which focused on her crucial tweets about politics and leadership. The researchers adopted four theories to capture and analyze the data from different angles to produce the rich analysis of Theresa May’s word choices and representation on Twitter. The study revealed several word choices used by Theresa May into four categories: (1) announcement tweets, (2) attack/negative tweets, (3) personal characteristics, and (4) policy. Furthermore, the study als...

The purpose of doing this is to improve the quality of teaching (Richard in http://www.tttjournal.co.uk; Tice, 2011) through data collection (Bailey, 1997). It is the attitude of questioning the practice of teacher’s profession (Bailey, 1997). The principles of doing this is by peer observation, written account of experiences, self-reports, auto biographies, journal writing, collaborative diary keeping and recording lessons (Richard in http://www.tttjournal.co.uk), student’s feedback (Tice, 2011), teacher’s stories (Bailey, 1997). Reflective teaching has been proven to learning effectiveness (Taghilou, 2007) and ‘encouraging growth and improving pedagogical knowledge and professional development for pre-service teachers’ (Rodman, 2010). This could be one of possible ways of teacher’s professional development, in which teachers act as adult learner and the fa...

This employs qualitative and quantitative research approaches to explore X Factor judges’ commentaries as a phenomenon. This article further investigates the existence of ‘appraisal theory’ on X-Factor judges’ commentaries.Appraisal theory invokes “attitude”, “graduation”, and “engagement”, which concerns the evaluation of commentaries (Martin & White, 2005). By analysing the findings from these commentaries, differences in how the judges operate the appraisal devices can be monitored through percentage acuity according to the following eight elements: affect-attitude (12, 71 %), judgement-attitude (44, 91%), appreciation-attitude (42, 37%), force-graduation (91, 67%), focus-graduation (8, 33%), mono-gloss engagement (0%), Dialogic contraction-engagement (62, 68%) and Dialogic expansion-engagement (40, 29 %)

Currently, politeness is not only used to show good etiquete in general daily conversation but is also be applied in the business field. The service in this business industry is competitive. Thus, giving the best service quality from politeness perspectives becomes a significant factor to attract the customer’s attention. In so doing, the service acts as a key point for the success of companies. In this case, politeness is displayed through good manners such as greeting, giving assistance, and thanking others. This paper focuses on interactions between front counter Indonesian staff and customers seeking service in an Indonesian “X” mini market. It examines politeness in openings and closings in that business setting. The data show that the staff more often employed impolite openings-closings (52%), whereas (18%) provided polite actions, and the rest (30%) were semi-polite openings-closings.

This awareness should be perceived by university students to maximize their academic potentials. In so doing, this mini research employs context analysis about: text, the purpose of text, the setting of text, the audience of text, the relationship between reader and writer, the expectations and conventions and the requirements of texts, shared values, background knowledge and understanding of text, intertextuality, the tone of text, assessment criteria followed by intercommunication of discourse community as proposed by Johns (1997). The context analysis on the disciplinary assignment through the active role of students as researcher is necessary. This would sensitize students what to do and what not to do in the learning activities. Furthermore, being well-informed on ethnographic writing, the study of academic practices in the university, is salient. This can be done, one of them, through the interview with the lecturer ...

I will discuss my teaching experiences in relation to the TEGCOM and its related literatures. I then showcase what and how my teaching experience matches with the pedagogy. I use the following TEGCOM (Lin, Wang, Akamatsu & Riazi (2002; 2005) reference to contextualize the Western materials to students’ cultural contexts. In this paper, I use auto-ethnography (Cauley, 2008; Ellis, Adam,Bochner, 2011) in elaborating my experience of teaching Discourse Analysis course, an empowering methodology which allows the personal story through the use of pronoun “I” (Dyson, 2007).

I learned English as a foreign language in the Junior High School in 1994-1997, and then senior high school from 1997-2000. In that time span, in Indonesia the curriculum applied was 1994 curriculum which emphasized the communicative approach (Darjowijoyo, 2000). It is worth noting that the government did not prioritize a particular variety of English, but UK and US English were the most popular (Darjowijoyo, 2000; Lauder, 2008). Despite the curriculum mandating the communicative approach, in my own experience the emphasis of English during junior and senior high school was on reading and grammar. The national exam was mostly multiple choice questions on reading, grammar, and a short dialogue. Therefore, there was a mismatch between what the curriculum aimed at (fluency in speaking), and what the test scores measured (Lie, 2007). Unlike the junior and the senior high schools which should follow the government’s cur...

Norton (2010) argues English learning does not deal with knowledge and skill acquisition alone, instead it also comprises a complex process of the learners’ identities, constructions, and reconstructions. Hence, English learning enables the shaping of English learners’ multiple identities. This study was conducted in one of the Islamic universities (IU) in Malang, Indonesia. The multilingual and multicultural contexts of Indonesia is a crucial factor to conduct this study. These social conditions do also underpin the constructions of English learners’ multiple identities in Indonesia (Wahyudi, 2018a). Hence, this study is intended to sketch out English learners’ multiple identities constructions in the globalization (Anjanillah, 2019). In order to reach the goal, this study employed Pennycook’s (2000) analytical framework dealing with English global positions...

This study uses poststructural and interdisciplinary lenses: Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA); Connell’s (2007) ideas of Southern Theory, Kumaravadivelu’s (2006b) Post Method Pedagogy, and Al-Faruqi’s (1989) and Al-Attas’ (1993) Islamisation of knowledge, as well as the critiques of these theories and other postcolonial voices. The critical examination of ELT practices through poststructural and interdisciplinary lenses in an Indonesian context is urgent, as teaching practices at present are subjected by competing regimes of ‘truth’ including Western, neoliberal, Southern, and Islamic discourses. The data were collected from curriculum policy documen...

However, there is still a lack of exploration of EFL learners’ identities in the ELF context. This study aims to find out how EFL learners' identities are categorized based on global, local and glocal identities. The study falls into critical applied linguistics as it combines Norton’s identity theory and Walshaw’s subject position’s notion to reveal participants’ subjectivities. This research is categorized as a case study as it explores participants’ identity positioning towards ELF. The results indicate that respondents’ identity options resonate with global, local or glocal identity. Global identity is shown by the tendency of the Inner Circle accent, progress, modernity, and daily activity. Local identity is indicated by maintaining the local accent, and Glocal identity is pointed out by the tendency to blend two identities at the same time. Two of the participants have show...
