Ashford between 1898-1934. Most studies of Ashford to date focus mainly on the intellectual framework per se, and rarely on the surrounding social environment. In order to achieve this aim, Ashford’s experiences were contrasted to those of Patrick Manson in Hong Kong and China between 1866 and 1889. By undertaking this comparative approach, it became clear that social factors more significantly affected the advancement on their respective investigations than intellectual ones. Manson simply did not have the political and financial support needed to develop his work, hence greatly delaying the establishment of a research institute in Hong Kong, or China for that matter. By contrast, Ashford achieved a great deal of popular and congressional support, thereby enabling him to establish a research institution early in the century. Relevant social factors included: cultural differences, their history of colonial relations and the local economy.

With science, it is held, comes democracy. But, will democracy necessarily blossom with the seed of science? Inversely, does the collapse of the Arecibo Observatory on December 1, 2020 represent a predictor for the future of Puerto Rico's political institutions? This book explores their many fruitful interactions during the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries. While special attention is given to the case of Puerto Rico, other small states throughout the Caribbean and Europe are also considered. The impact of science upon political theory, the active use of science to defend nationalism and sovereignty, as well as the role science played in the formation of the United States are all themes touched upon in an attempt to provide a definitive answer to their relationship. Aside from its analysis of schools as social Darwinism, eugenics, and sociobiology, it attempts to evaluate their veracity using cases as Japan's Unit 731, the Guatemala Syphilis study, and others. In spite of the much disputed claims of evolutionary psychology, it appears that the key to establishing ethical institutions and societies lies in the realm of public information.// https://www.amazon.com/Biology-Ethics-Rodrigo-Fernos/dp/1949756092/

Yet when we turn to the details and contours of the history of science, we find humble beginnings that could have easily resulted in different outcomes. The aim of this book is to open these hidden corridors so as to show not only the fragility of early scientific endeavors, but to also provide a greater appreciation for the courage and sacrifice of its formative practitioners. https://www.amazon.com/Galileo-Boltzmann-History-Fragility-Resilience/dp/1621378225/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=rodrigo+fernos&qid=1554167126&s=gateway&sr=8-3-spell

If we can state that Latin America has been the focus of global science, such as the case of Charles Darwin and numerous other students of natural history during the colonial period demonstrate, with greater difficulty could we claim that its scientists have substantially contributed to global scientific knowledge. The development of its science has taken a lethargic pace in comparison to other Western nations, such as the United States or Germany. Why? Some would speculate that the central cause has been political colonialism, economic imperialism, or intrinsic hispanic cultural traits. However, as with any good scientific study, before answering the “why?”, it is important to review the “what?”, “how?”, “where?” and “when?” This study describes the historical contours of science in Latin America, from the indigenous pre-Colombian period to the modern era, with the purpose of seeking to understand the causes of this problematic identity trait. https://www.amazon.com/En-Busca-del-Fénix-Historia/dp/1425913962/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=rodrigo+fernos&qid=1554167126&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spell

Bringing together scientists, engineers, and medical researchers from both South and North America, they facilitated the exchange of ideas between the two regions at the beginning of the twentieth century. Nobel Prize thinkers such as Albert Michelson and others, such as Franz Boas and Elmer Sperry, were some of the participants. The study describes the latest scientific advancements being diffused in these congresses, as well as the factors affecting the adoption of such advancements. https://www.amazon.com/Science-Still-Born-Scientific-Congresses/dp/0595748422/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=rodrigo+fernos&qid=1554167126&s=gateway&sr=8-6-spell

Whether Sir Hans Sloane, founder of the British Museum and President of the Royal Society of London, who as a physician wrote about African medical beliefs and practices, or Dr. Leonard Wood, military physician who served as military governor to Cuba, medicine and its practitioners have played a key role in the perception of the African Other. The book is a collection of essays treating the subject from various points of views. While it may perhaps not surprise the reader that colonial physicians often failed to acknowledge the same failings in their own Western medicine as that criticized of African practices, the medical view found later in the period lacked that biting racism of an earlier era. https://www.amazon.com/Medicine-International-Relations-Caribbean-Historical/dp/0595382398/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=rodrigo+fernos&qid=1554167126&s=gateway&sr=8-5-spell
