Nevertheless, the total energy cost of CCHP systems can be highly dependent on the operation of individual components and load balancing. The latter refers to the process of fulfilling the thermal and electrical demand by partitioning or "balancing" the energy requirement between the available sources of energy supply. The energy cost can be optimized through an energy dispatch algorithm which provides operational/control signals for the optimal operation of the equipment. The algorithm provides optimal solutions on decisions regarding generating power locally or buying power from the grid. This paper presents an initial study on developing an optimal energy dispatch algorithm that minimizes the...

The aggregate impact of large-scale NZEH implementations on the U.S. electrical grid is evaluated through a simulation-based study of prototype residential building models with distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation systems. An EnergyPlus residential prototype building model (i.e., a multi-family low-rise apartment building) is used to determine the detailed electricity consumption of each residential building model using U.S. climate weather files. This study assumes that net-metering is available on the electrical grid so that the surplus on-site electricity generation can be fed to the electrical grid. This study also considers the impact of electrical energy storage (EES) within NZEHs to effectively use on-site generated electricity on the electrical grid. Finally, surveyed residential building permits in 2017 are used to e...

The advantage of these worksheets is that, with proper guidance, students can learn a systematic methodology that allows for a better understanding on how to approach and solve engineering problems as compared to using pencil, paper, and graphing calculators. For ME students at MSU, these worksheets are required in three courses: Engineering Analysis, System Dynamics, and Energy Systems Design. A significant advantage to sequencing courses in this manner is that students spend more time (and effort) in engineering functions (formulation, verification, and validations) than in the arithmetic function (primarily accomplished by Mathcad). Details, examples, and assessment of effectiveness are discussed in ...
This paper presents an analysis to determine the economic, energetic, and environmental benefits ... more This paper presents an analysis to determine the economic, energetic, and environmental benefits that could be obtained from the implementation of a combined solar-power organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with electric energy storage (EES) to supply electricity to several commercial buildings including a large office, a small office, and a full service restaurant. The operational strategy for the ORC-EES system consists in the ORC charging the EES when the irradiation level is sufficient to generate power, and the EES providing electricity to the building when there is not irradiation (i.e., during night time). Electricity is purchased from the utility grid unless it is provided by the EES. The potential of the proposed system to reduce primary energy consumption (PEC), carbon dioxide emission (CDE), and cost was evaluated. Furthermore, the available capital cost for a variable payback period for the ORC-EES system was determined for each of the evaluated buildings. The effect of the numbe...

This paper presents a method for obtaining a solution for all the roots of a transcendental equat... more This paper presents a method for obtaining a solution for all the roots of a transcendental equation within a bounded region by finding a polynomial equation with the same roots as the transcendental equation. The proposed method is developed using Cauchy’s integral theorem for complex variables and transforms the problem of finding the roots of a transcendental equation into an equivalent problem of finding roots of a polynomial equation with exactly the same roots. The interesting result is that the coefficients of the polynomial form a vector which lies in the null space of a Hankel matrix made up of the Fourier series coefficients of the inverse of the original transcendental equation. Then the explicit solution can be readily obtained using the complex fast Fourier transform. To conclude, the authors present an example by solving for the first three eigenvalues of the 1D transient heat conduction problem.

To estimate the impact of NZEBs on the electrical grid, a simulation-based study of an office building with a grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) power generation system is conducted. This study assumes that net-metering is available for NZEBs such that the excess on-site PV generation can be fed to the electrical grid. The impact of electrical energy storage (EES) within NZEBs on the electrical grid is also considered in this study. Different levels of NZEB adoption are examined: 20%, 50%, and 100% of the U.S. office building stock. Results indicate that significant penetration of NZEBs could potentially affect the current U.S. electricity demand profiles by reducing purchased electricity from the electrical grid and by increasing exported electricity to the electrical grid during peak hours. Annual electricity consumption of simulat...
