Additionally, the number of maternal deaths is estimated to be 16–18 each day, with 4-6 of those deaths being directly related to unsafe abortion. “Maternal mortality” is still primarily caused by unsafe abortion. Abortion is criminalised under the laws of Uganda, with only one vague and limited exception. Uganda's abortion laws and policies are confusing and their parameters remain contested among health service providers, law enforcement officers, judges, and women and girls. Despite the fact that the uncertainty of the legal position risks misapplication of the law, abortion laws are actively enforced. Women and girls and health workers are left vulnerable to law enforcement personnel and face arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment. The official teachings of the Catholic Church, which Pope John Paul II published in 1992, reject any type of abortion procedure whose primary goal is to kill a zygote, blastocyst, embryo, or fetus "Absolute regard for and protection of human life must begin at conception. In Uganda, under Section 224 of the Penal Code Act CAP 120, a person is not criminally responsible for performing in good faith and with reasonable care and skill a surgical operation upon an unborn child for the preservation of the mother's life. In addition, Section 205 of the Code provides that no person shall be guilty of the offence of causing by willful act a child to die before it has an independent existence from its mother if the act was carried out in good faith for the purpose of preserving the mother's life.

However, Australia is noted to get concerned after the rise of the death rates among the indigenous people in custody. The media that operates on spreading the news to the public plays is in a better position to enlighten the community concerning the death in the custody. Primarily, the ethical conduct precludes journalists from disclosing information in favor of a particular person or group against others. Piece of information displayed by the journalist are always considered to carry an accuracy of 90%, hence highly believed by the community. As a matter of fact, it is the responsibilities of the journalist to find out why the rate at which indigenous people die in custody increases as compared to the non-indigenous. However, it should be noted that the journalist, through the media, operated against their code of ethics in favor of the non-indigenous people. There are various roles of journalists, and these among others include ensuring impartiality, authenticity and honesty.
