As Bigazzi and co-authors correctly state, these data have the potential for the establishment of sound regional chronostratigraphic markers. The city of Naples (Italy) has been frequently affected by processes generating such landforms in the last decades: for this reason, an update of the sinkhole inventory and a preliminary susceptibility estimation are proposed in this work. Starting from previous data, not modified since 2010, a total of 270 new events occurred in the period February 2010–June 2021 were collected through the examination of online newspapers, local daily reports, council chronicle news and field surveys. The final consistence of the updated inventory is of 458 events occurred between 1880 and 2021, distributed through time with an increasing trend in frequency. Spatial analysis of sinkholes indicates a concentration in the central sector of the city, corresponding to its ancient and historic centre, crossed by a dense network of underground tunnels and cavities. Cavity-roof collapse is confirmed as one of the potential genetic types, along with processes related to rainfall events and service lines damage. A clear correlation between monthly rainfall and the number of triggered sinkholes was identified. Finally, a preliminary sinkhole susceptibility assessment, carried out by Frequency Ratio method, confirms the central sector of city as that most susceptible to sinkholes and emphasizes the predisposing role of service lines, mostly in the outermost areas of the city.

Several landforms, in the past supposed to be related to karst phenomena, could be due to deep piping phenomena triggered by sudden and catastrophic events. Ancient chronicles indicate that these phenomena are related to high magnitude seis-mic events; examples are the collapses during the 1703 Aquila earthquake and 1915 Avezzano earthquakes in the Fucino Plain. Piping sinkholes could have been triggered by these ancient earthquakes, sub-circular ponds, that lie in several plains of the Abruzzo region, could represent these piping sinkholes actually water filled. Areas affected by these phenomena are intermountains tectonic valleys bordered by direct or strike-slip regional faults and filled by thick alluvial deposits (i.e. Sulmona and Fucino plains). In some river valleys, showing ...

Papasodaro, Reference stratigraphic units for Plio-Quaternary deposits mapping in CARG. Within the new geological Map of Italy at the 1:50.000 scale, unconformity bounded stratigraphic units have mostly been adopted, in the Central-Southern part of the country, to represent Quaternary continental deposits. However, field geologists applied different criteria for their classification because of both the lack of prescriptions by stratigraphic codes and the absence of previous experience with such units in the Italian setting. In some areas UBSU have been used as tools that allow us to synthesize: in a regional framework only a few units, bounded by disconformity related to important climatic events, have been identified. In other areas, due to the complex recent geological evolution and to poor correlation elements, UBSU have allowed only for local synthesis. The latter, as a whole, are disposed according to an eastward dipping gentle monocline. Remarkable sinsedimentary tectonics conditioned the morphologic structure of the basin and its depositional settings, as well as the marine sequence. Netwithstanding its overall unitariness it shows various differentiations, both vertically and horizontally, with sedimentary and angular unconformities of considerable extent. [...]

Sinkholes formation in the Fucino plain have started since1876, and this process is still active in numerous places in the plain (the most recent collapse dates back to the April 2009). This investigation that involves geology, geomorphology, soil gas survey, isotope and hydro-geochemistry) has allowed to determine the formation of the sinkholes of the Fucino plain as a result of the contribution of different processes: karst dissolution, liquefaction of mediumfine alluvial sediments, piping and/or chemical dissolution of quaternary sediments.
