Stroke also may affect all levels of the auditory pathway and lead to hearing reception and/or perception deficits for different sound types. Aim of the work The aim of the work is to evaluate the perception of music, environmental sounds, and speech in post-stroke patients in order to determine if there is a difference in the basic auditory perceptual abilities in right versus left cerebral stroke. Subjects and methods A group of 30 healthy adults and a group of 30 right and left cerebral stroke patients with an age range from 35 to 75 years old were included. The participants were evaluated using a 10-item designed questionnaire for auditory abilities and a test of auditory perceptual/recognition skills. The questionnaire addressed some of the basic auditory skills of attention, discrimination, and recognition of environmental sounds and human voice. The test consisted of non-ver...

Clinical presentation is often insidious and dysphagia symptoms are seldomly mentioned by elderly patients although causing many life-threatening complications. The aim of this work was to introduce an easy applicable tool to be used by the caregivers and general practitioners for screening of dysphagia in geriatrics for early detection of at risk individuals. Methods A sample of 200 Egyptian Arabic-speaking elderly patients (65 years or older) not complaining of dysphagia was recruited from nursing homes in Greater Cairo Area. They or their caregivers completed the designed screening tool, including; the designed questionnaires of dysphagia manifestations and eating habits. General, oral motor and bedside evaluation were also performed. In addition to filling in the EAT10 questionnaire and FEES that was performed for only suspected cases for the purpose of validation...

In recent years, the study of communicative competence has extended to examining longer discourse units, including narratives in many languages. Unfortunately, few studies have been carried out to assess narrative skills in Arabic-speaking children. Objective The aim of this study was to design an assessment protocol for narrative skills in Arabic-speaking children in order to reach a better understanding of their developmental pattern. Participants and methods The study was carried out on 60 Arabic-speaking normal Egyptian children aged between 2 and 6 years. The children were divided into four groups according to their age. An assessment tool was designed to assess their narrative skills on three aspects, namely, story structure, language structure, and narrative productivity. Results The results revealed significant differences between the groups in all studied aspects. Narrative skills w...

The WM recall tests included recall of word sets different in length and rhyming, digit span, letter sequences and picture-number test. The nonword repetition test was used to assess phonological encoding through measuring number of phonological errors produced on repeating the task, and to measure the reaction time. The children who stutter (CWS) had performed poorly on some working memory tests compared to the control group. Conclusion: Children who stutter may have diminished ability to recall nonwords and some of working memory abilities and that further investigation into this possibility may shed light on the emergence and characteristics ...
