The vulture expert wants to set up vulture restaurants to save the birds: OUTLOOKINDIA, 28th June, 1999: 10 Questions, Page 36, by Rakesh Kalshian 1. Que: The vulture expert wants to set up vulture restaurants to save the birds. What are they? Ans: They are feeding stations aimed at saving the ultimate scavengers on earth from extinction. 2. Que: Who pioneered this idea, when and where? Ans: The Natal Parks Board in South Africa first conceived the idea in 1966 to draw the vultures away from the cities. 3. Que: Which other places have vulture restaurants? Ans: Over 100 such restaurants exist in South Africa, Spain, Italy and France, among others. 4. Que: What would the menu be like in these restaurants? Ans: Skinned mammal carcasses, chipped bones and clean water. Perches for resting too. 5. Que: Should we have more vultures in Delhi? Ans: No, not in big cities. But an optimum population in the countryside and forests is highly desirable. 6. Que: Has their drastic dwindling-from 5,000 to less than 100-had a major impact on the city's civic life? Ans: Decline in their numbers is perhaps good for a city, provided there is efficient disposal of carcasses. 7. Que: Where will you site these restaurants without upsetting the public? Ans: Ideally, in and around protected areas like national parks because they can boost ecotourism. Also, away from urban areas as it might aggravate the problem of collisions with aircraft. 8. Que: Are vultures endemic to most cities in the world? Ans: Vultures thrive in places lacking in efficient carcass disposal systems. 9. Que: Are vultures disappearing only in Delhi or is it a universal trend? Ans: Disappearance of vultures from their earlier strongholds is a universal trend. 10. Que: Have you broached the idea with the ministry of environment and forests? Ans: No, but if it okays it, the World Wildlife Fund has funds to start a pilot project to see if this concept would work in India or not. Unfortunately the project could not be implemented due to factors beyond my control. So now time is ripe to implement the project by setting up a string of Vulture Restaurants all over the Indian Sub-continent away from aerodromes (both civil and military) in strategic locations where the service of vultures as scavengers is indispensable and where they cannot pose a hazard to aircraft flight safety.
Setting up Vulture Restaurants in strategic locations far away from aerodromes(at least 100 km aw... more Setting up Vulture Restaurants in strategic locations far away from aerodromes(at least 100 km away) will be the best vulture conservation tool that keeps vultures tied to the feeding site without a thread thus minimizing vulture strike hazards to aircraft flight safety. Vulture Restaurants (also known as Supplementary Feeding Sites for Vultures) provide uncontaminated food (large mammal carcasses in necessary quantity as well as bone chips as calcium supplement and water to drink and bathe) to vultures in an enclosure that provides safety while feeding, resting, drinking and bathing which is not available in nature. Moreover, it gives freedom to the birds to visit the feeding site whenever they want, allows them to fly where ever and whenever they want thus respecting the principles of animal welfare and environmental ethics. As confinement and handling of birds as in captive-holding and captive-breeding centres are not there, there is no fear psychosis or imprinting or health problems for vultures. Moreover, this conservation tool respects all norms of animal ethics, health and welfare. Population of vultures can be controlled to an optimum size by managing the quantity of food provided in the form of carcasses. Photography of and studies on vultures can be done using hides so that the birds in enclosure are not affected by the human activities. Vulture restaurants can be used for awareness purposes on species conservation and bird collisions with aircraft and as a tool for research for school and college students. This can be an excellent tourist attraction. After two to three years of setting up the vulture restaurant, the system can become self-sustaining and no more external funding will be required if a small entry fee is administered to use the system by outsiders. As this project provides employment for at least two people, one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and an Assistant, large number of Vulture Restaurants set up all over India
I wanted to let you know about this petition I just started on Change.org, "PM: How do we save endangered vultures while preventing their collisions with aircraft?" This can be a legitimate and inspiring new year resolution and beginning of a revolution and a people's movement to save vultures, aircraft and flyers simultaneously where BSRGI, NDRF, IEI and NIAS can take lead and take common man, NGOs, like-minded scientists, Civic Authorities and responsible Governmental Officials whom we wish to sensitize on this issue. I have requested to BRGI, NDRF, IEI and NIAS that they in turn should request their members and governing members to sign this petition and share it with others to make it a success and achieve desirable results. I plan to conduct an Airport BASH Management Training workshop in Bangalore in December (19 & 20) 2016. This event will be conducted under the aegis of Bird Strike Research Group of India (BSRGI) under the National Design and Research Forum (NDRF) a wing of Institution of Engineers India Ltd-IEIL- (a very huge Organization with over 130 branches all over India and with support from National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS). This training workshop will be carried out with advice and guidance from DGCA, IAF, AAI and private airports in India. This training workshop will be unique because it deals with fundamentals, best practices and advanced methods as well as state-of-the art technology used globally. It will also bring interface of academia and industry through rendezvous of commercial manufacturers and vendors/agents of bird detection and bird control devices and systems as well as airport operators (consumers) for two days in December (most positively on 19th & 20th). Let us look for a very successful workshop benefiting airport/airfield/airline/ATC/aviation regulator employees as well as biologists who want to work as BASHM officers at airports. You will not be able to compare our workshop with that of FAA, EASA or ICAO because nowhere the trainers have all the requisite qualifications and experience such as a Ph D in Ornithology, Research Experience on BASHM at civil and military airports and species conservation experience with premier NGOs such as BNHS and WWF-India, Experience of evaluating bird control devices, Airport experience at a higher level on BASHM in a busy (over 125,000 aircraft movements per year) International Airport such as Delhi Intl airport. Once the brochure on workshop is ready it will be sent to you along with invitation to participate. Kindly send us the names, email addresses, and Mobile numbers of prospective participants so that copies of brochure and invitation can be sent to them Thanks & regards, Dr S M Satheesan, India’s Leading Airport BASH Management / Aircraft Bird Strike Prevention Consulting Expert, Mumbai
