BECLIN-1, a protein that interacts with either BCL-2 or PI3k class III, plays a critical role in the regulation of both autophagy and cell death. Induction of autophagy is associated with the presence of vacuoles characteristically labelled with the protein LC3. We have studied the biological and clinical significance of BECLIN 1 and LC3 in ovary tumours of different histological types. The positive expression of BECLIN 1 was well correlated with the presence of LC3-positive autophagic vacuoles and was inversely correlated with the expression of BCL-2. The latter inhibits the autophagy function of BECLIN 1. We found that type I tumours, which are less aggressive than type II, were more frequently expressing high level of BECLIN 1. Of note, tumours of histologic grade III expressed low level of BECLIN 1. Consistently, high level of expression of BECLIN 1 and LC3 in tumours is well correlated with the...

The focus is on the construction of the tables of the friction characteristics for the typical aggregates and the friction performance for the typical hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures used in Indiana. Without traffic application, the aging of HMA materials may not cause enough changes in pavement friction. In order to better evaluate the friction characteristics of the aggregates, this paper introduces the decreasing rate of the British pendulum number, which provides more consistent evaluation of the friction durability. This paper divides the variations of pavement friction over time into three phases and shows the corresponding friction patterns. Open-graded friction course and stone mastic asphalt mix produce more consistent friction performance than SuperPave mix. For a certain mix, steel slag provides greater friction numbers than crushed gravel, crushed stone, and dolomite aggregates. For SuperPave 9.5-mm mix, crushed gravel provides more consistent friction properties than dolomite and crushed stone in the first year. However, they may become compatible with each other in friction properties later.

Multi-spectroscopic methods used to study the interaction of Pt(II) complex with calf thymus (ct-DNA) in Tris-HCl buffer solution (pH 7.4). The Pt(II) complex was found to be a minor groove binder with a preference for the A-T region compared to the G-C region. This was substantiated by displacement studies with Hoechst 33258, a known minor groove binder. The mean binding constant obtained from the spectroscopic techniques was 7 × 10(4) M(-1). In comparison with the previous study, the binding constant of Pt(II) complex is 15 times greater than the corresponding value of levetiracetam. These results indicate that the binding affinity of Pt(II) complex is stronger than levetiracetam.
Abstract Cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) film was formed on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) ... more Abstract Cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) film was formed on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) modified gold electrode by electrodeposition from 0.5 M KCl solution containing CoCl2 and K3Fe(CN)6. The electrochemical behavior and the electrocatalytic property of the modified electrode were investigated. Compared with CoHCF/gold electrode, the CoHCF/MWNTs/gold electrode exhibits greatly improved stability and enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of thiosulfate. A linear range from 5.0×10−5 to 6.5×10−3 M (r=0.9990) for thiosulfate detection at the CoHCF/MWNTs/gold electrode was obtained, with a detection limit of 2.0×10−5 M (S/N=3).

In situ hybridization of MMP‐9 mRNA and immunohistochemistry of VEGF and CD34 proteins were performed on surgical specimens of gastric cancers from 118 patients compared with 20 nonmalignant gastric mucosae. Their relationships to pathological parameters and survival times were determined by statistical analysis. The positive rate of MMP‐9 in noncancerous gastric mucosae was significantly lower than that of gastric cancer tissue (60.17%, P < 0.01). In patients with cancers of the infiltrating type, at stage T3‐T4, with vessel invasion, lymphatic metastasis, hepatic, or peritoneal metastasis, the positive expression rates of MMP‐9 mRNA, VEGF protein, and CD34 were significantly higher than those for patients with tumors of the expanding type (...

The effect of grating position information, scanning time and scanning frequency range on the spectrum signals was analyzed by simulation. The FMCW multiplexing system, which was composed of the arbitrary waveform generator, light intensity modulator and multiplier etc, was established and the certifications were delivered by the experimental system.

Most rice viruses are transmitted through insect vectors. However, the traditional whole-plant inoculation method cannot control the initial inoculation site in rice plants because the insect feeding sites in plants are random. To solve this problem, we established a determined-part inoculation approach in this study that restricted the insect feeding sites to specific parts of the rice plant. Rice stripe virus (RSV) was used as the model virus and was inoculated at the bottom of the stem using our method. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analyses detected RSV only present at the bottom of the Nipponbare (NPB) stem at 1 day post-inoculation (dpi), indicating that our method successfully controlled the inoculation site. With time, RSV gradually moved from the bottom of the stem to the leaf in NPB rice plants, indicating that systemic viral spread can also be monitored using this method. In addition, a cultivar re...

The morphology of the electrodes was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). And the component of the electrodes was analyzed by Energy Dispersive Spectrum (EDS). The specific surface area and pore size of the electrode were investigated by nitrogen adsorption. The phase constituents were analyzed by X ray diffraction (XRD), and the electrocatalytic characteristics for hydrogen evolution reaction of the electrodes in 30% (mass fraction) KOH solution were investigated by cathode polarization curve. The experimental results showed that the pores were formed on surface of the foam NiZn alloy electrodes after heat treatment at 600 °C, and with the etching by 10% HCl, nano layered structure was formed on the surface of the porous skeleton. Compared with the nickel foam, the surface area of the NiZn foam alloy electrode became l...

The relations between benefits from adjuvant chemoradiotherapy and levels of postoperative serum CA19-9, CA125 and CEA were investigated in 804 pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients who received radical resection. Adjuvant chemoradiotherapy was an independent factor for late recurrence [12.2 vs. 8.5 months, P = 0.001 for recurrence free survival (RFS)] and long survival [23.7 vs. 17.0 months, P < 0.001 for overall survival (OS)] in resected pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Postoperative serum CA19-9, CA125 and CEA were independent risk predictors for poor surgical outcome in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (P < 0.001 for all). Adjuvant chemradiotherapy (hazard ratio: 0.359, 95% confidence interval: 0.253-0.510, P < 0.001 for OS; hazard ratio: 0.522, 95% confidence interval: 0.387-0.705, P < 0.001 for RFS) were confirmed to improve the surgical outcome in patients with ab...

In situ carbonization of template micelles at 923 K combined with the excess aluminum used in one-pot synthesis of MCM-41 are adopted to tailor the tortuosity of mecsoporous channels, while loaded metal oxides (5 wt.-%) and the Al-component in framework are employed to exert the necessary electrostatic interaction towards the target carcinogens TSNA in solution. The elaborated micro-environment created in mesoporous sorbents was characterized with XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, XPS and TG-DSC methods. Various solutions of Burley and Virginia type tobaccos were used to assess the adsorption performance of new mesoporous sorbents, and the influence of solid to liquid ratio, adsorption time and loading amount of CuO on the adsorption was carefully examined.
