This article presents a survey of some of the most recent trends in the appli cation of linguist... more This article presents a survey of some of the most recent trends in the appli cation of linguistics to second language learning and teaching. The theoretical foundations of contrastive analysis, error analysis, and interlanguage are briefly discussed and subjected to critical evaluation. The conclusion is that the findings of contrastive analysis and error analysis cannot be said to offer solutions to all of the structural problems encountered in teaching a second language. When reviewed in broader terms, applied linguistics should be used to focus attention on social functions of language such as language attitudes and communicative com petence.
