For that reason technical aspects of durability and sustainability which can lead to improved durability and sustainability of asphalt pavements are important parameters for pavement performance. The predominant failure modes of asphalt pavements are: rutting, thermal cracking, fatigue, stripping, fretting, ageing and mixture design failures. Improvements in durability whereby the onset of any of the above failure modes can be extended will also improve the sustainability of the pavement. The main elements that can influence durability of pavements will be described in this paper with a focus on examples of premature failures and an analysis of contributing factors, examined with reference to current available lab evaluations. The short and long term ageing behaviour and the correlation with ageing of asphalt and bitumen will be described. Good practices to improve durability will be given by descri...

Numerous different methods are in use which measure different fractions of the fumes and have different capture efficiencies making comparison of data measured using different samplers problematic. Eurobitume initiated a study in order to recommend an appropriate exposure metric. The resulting paper discusses practical issues (measurement and quantification). Starting from a literature review, recommendations for a reliable sampling and analytical method are given as such as relevant monitoring strategy as it is required in occupational hygiene. The bitumen fumes are made of particulates and vapours. The suitable sampling train used to capture these fumes is based on on-line elements i.e. an individual sampler provided with an appropriate filter (capture of the particulates) and backed-up with a tube containing an adsorbent (capture of the vapours). It is strictly recommended to separ...

The bitumen LCI is a cradle to gate study. It covers: • extraction of crude oil; • transport to Europe including pipeline and ship transport; • manufacturing of bitumen in a complex refinery; and • hot storage of the product. • It also takes into account the construction of production facilities (infrastructure). The study covers paving grade bitumens from the product standard EN 12591 table 1, which includes penetration grades 20 to 220 1/10 mm. The main bitumen production route is straight-run distillation (atmospheric distillation + vacuum distillation). Other manufacturing processes, such as semi-blowing, propane deasphalting and visbreaking were evaluated. In addition to bitumen, LCIs for polymer modified bitumen (PMB) with 3,5% polymer and bitumen emulsion with 65% bitumen were calculated. The report is based upon the most recent information available from the ...
