The viewpoints of the four major groups involved—pharmaceutical manufacturers, physicians, regulators and consumers—are discussed, the legal questions such advertising raises are examined and the costs and benefits of it are reviewed. Finally, some recommendations are developed to assist the two groups most actively involved: manufacturers and regulators.

However, Vietnamese rice farmers face several challenges, including pressures to develop sustainable livelihoods while reducing the environmental impacts of their production activities. Various Vietnamese agricultural restructuring policies were promulgated to promote the adoption of environmentally friendly practices to generate high value added for rice farmers, but the farmers are reluctant to adopt them because of perceived lack of demand. Decreasing consumption of rice in Asia and increasing demands in Europe shaped Vietnamese rice exporting policies. New trade agreements, such as the UK–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, offer new target markets for Vietnamese rice farmers. This research provides empirical evidence related to the preferences of UK consumers for ethical attributes for floating rice imported from Vietnam. Floating rice represents a traditional method of rice cultivation that relies on the natural floodi...

Among the controversies surrounding this practice is its effect on prescription drug prices. The authors examine the effects of manufacturers’ direct-to-consumer advertising on retail gross margins to determine what the effect of such advertising has been on retailers’ margins. The authors test a hypothesis that is based on the “dual-stage ” theory, which describes a relationship between manufacturers’ advertising and the retail gross margins of advertised brands, and, on the basis of the results, discuss public policy implications.

Further, the act of monitoring can deplete valuable cognitive resources. In response to these concerns, technologies have been developed to aid those wanting to control their food intake. Of note, devices can now track eating in number of bites taken as opposed to more traditional units such as pieces or volume. Through two studies, the current research investigates the effects of tracking food portions at the bite level on cognitive resources, enjoyment of the eating experience, and objective and subjective self-control. Results indicate that using wearable technology to track bite portions, as compared to doing so mentally, (1) reduces cognitive resource depletion, (2) is equally as effective for allowing users to successfully achieve eating goals, and (3) does not reduce enjoyment of the eating experience. These resul...

However, this paper aims to propose that some individuals actively make attempts to exercise control over their eventual demise by engaging in decision-making to achieve an “appropriate death.” A framework is introduced that provides the basis for exploring aspects of decision-making for end of life.Design/methodology/approachDepth interviews were conducted with 18 consumers about their dispositions toward death and their decision-making regarding their own funerals.FindingsAn analysis of the consumer narratives suggests that individuals make efforts to prepare for end of life by reducing conflict and finishing business, enlisting identity management strategies and coming to terms with death itself. Unique consumption experiences and decisions accompany each of these efforts.Research limitations/implicationsThis research provides understanding regar...

Findings indicate that individuals are more likely to consume hedonic products when feeling sad than when experiencing fear/anxiety. Also, using “emotion regulation language” in advertising messages was more effective for individuals experiencing fear/anxiety than those that were sad. This research underscores the need to continue examining discrete emotions as opposed to valence-based emotions. Consumers' response to various marketing stimuli may be dependent on the specific emotion experienced rather than on global affective states.

Interviews with professional truck drivers provided an assessment of the stressors that they experience. The insights offered from these individuals were then integrated into a conceptual model. The model was tested via data collected through surveys administered to drivers using structural equation modeling.FindingsResults from the interviews, as well as the results from the survey administered to professional drivers, suggest that truck drivers experience severe time pressures. Such time pressures create stress which can lead to physical fatigue and emotional exhaustion. Further, both of these debilitating conditions are related to negative attitudes about safety co...
