Sexual activity is a natural part of human existence and its effectiveness is recognized as a key indicator of good health and quality of life. In this study, we aimed to analyze the influence of COVID-19 on sexual activity in four recovered male patients. These males showed deterioration in all elements of sexual function. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that we are reporting from Kolkata, India, that used validated assessment to document sexual functioning in males following post-COVID-19 illness.

Methods: The study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India from 1st August 2014 to 31st January 2015with clinically suspected sepsis patients. Neonatal sepsis screening was done as per standard clinical guidelines. Specimens were collected, transported and processed for microbiological work up as per specified scheme using BACT ALERT 3D & VITEK-2 AES. Data were analysed according to standard statistical methods. Results: Total 96 samples for blood culture were received from clinically suspected patients. Of these, 25 were culture positive (26.04%). Isolated organisms included 13 Gram positive cocci, 8 Gram negative bacilli, 4 non albicans Candida. Gram positive cocci were more frequently isolated than Gram negative bacilli (52%). 5 out of 11 samples from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) were found to be culture positive(45.4%). Isolated organisms from NICU included 2 Candida spp., 2 Escherichia coli &1 M...

Infections are important cause of death in diabetes and remain a very important cause of morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes. Most common type of diabetes in Indian population is type 2 DM. Most common infection associated with DM found to be urinary tract infections (UTI). Objective: The main objectives of this study were to isolate, identify and to determine antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of microbiological agents of UTI in type 2 DM patients and assess prognosis of these patients with prescribed antimicrobial treatment regimen. Results and Discussions: We conducted the study from December 2013 to December 2018 in the department of microbiology from the patients attending the outpatients department of a tertiary care hospital. In this study, total 774 non-repetitive patients’ samp...

Human infections due to Aeromonas caviae may present as a variety of diseases, such as wound infection, acute gastroenteritis, septicemia, pneumonia, septic arthritis or endocarditis. It has rarely been reported as a causative organism of septicemia. We present a successfully treated case of post- traumatic necrotizing soft tissue infection with sepsis of nosocomial origin due to multidrug resistant (MDR) Aeromonas caviae in a 51-year-old immunocompetent individual. Phenotypic confirmation was done by VITEK 2 COMPACT Advance Expert System.

It is a known causative organism for zoonotic infections especially skin and soft tissue infections after animal bite. It is known to cause respiratory tract infection among immunocompromised patients. Here we present a case of community-acquired lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in an apparently immunocompetent middle aged female patient caused by multidrugresistant (MDR) Pasteurella canis biovar2. We suggest the organism to be included in differential diagnosis in such cases.

Mostly it is considered as a contaminant or colonizer of skin. Here, we describe a 22-years-old female patient presenting with non-lactational breast abscess with purulent nipple discharge. Besides showing pus cells and Gram positive cocci in Gram stain, the abscess aspirate and the nipple discharge yielded pure growth of S. hominis subsp. hominis in culture. The phenotypic confirmation and antibiotic sensitivity of isolated organism were performed using VITEK2 Compact Advanced Expert System. The patient was prescribed antibiotic based upon the antibiogram of the isolated organism following percutaneous aspiration of the abscess cavity and she responded well to this treatment.

This study was conducted to compare cytology, Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) staining and culture findings of clinically suspected tubercular lymphadenitis case. In the Present Study clinically suspected cases of lymphadenitis were undergoing Fine Needle Aspiration. The aspirate were examined cytologically followed by ZN staining and culture. Results: 42 samples were collected from clinically suspected cases of tubercular lymphadenitis were processed for cytology which showed 57.1%, regular smear with ZN staining showed 23% and culture on Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) media showed 28% positive aetiological diagnostic results. Among the 12 culture positive for mycobacteria 9(75%) phenotypically identified as M.tuberculosis, rest three were M.chelonae, M.abscessus and M. fortuitum. Conclusion: In spite of the diagnostic pitfal...

The present study was conducted on 200 patients came for consultation in the Out Patients Department of ENT, R.G.Kar Medical College, Kolkata. Apart from the use of topical drops, the humid conditions produced by the discharge, epithelial debris and alkaline pH are the other factors responsible for the secondary fungal infections. In the present study, the most common age group affected was between 21-30 years(32%). Women (57%) were more often affected than male. Most common presenting symptoms being otorrhoea followed by otalgia, aural fullness and hearing loss. Fungal infection in chronic otitis media was found significantly associated with antibiotic-steroid drop use. Out of 200 cases, 74(37%) were positive on culture. Culture positivity was more in Chronic Otitis Media (COM) without any active discharge (45.2%) than in Chronic Suppurati...
