Susan Oehler Herrick
Susan Oehler Herrick, Ph.D., is an educator currently teaching 7th and 8th grade world history at All Saints' Episcopal Day School in Phoenix, Arizona. A breadth of classroom experience, as well as a masters degree in secondary social studies education (M.Ed., Vanderbilt University), inform her approach to teaching and learning.
Herrick's past professional experience as an instructor, educational consultant, and ethnomusicologist (Ph.D., Indiana University) includes engaging learners in community colleges, universities, and public high schools, as well as museum education and teacher professional development programs. As Part-Time Faculty in the Humanities Department of Lakeland Community College (2011-2015), Herrick was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014.
Herrick applies effective strategies for teaching that engage learners in local-global relationships, facilitate explorations of music and the arts that connect to daily life, or engage lifelong learners in museum programming. Academic publications reflect specializations in pedagogy, African American music and culture, and applied ethnomusicology. Recent consulting projects for the Center for American Music's Voices Across Time projects received funding, in part, from grants of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Heinz Endowments. Additional skills include education management in non-profits, including program development, resource design, and outreach.
