Sixteen marital partners participated in this interview study. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, interpreted, and analyzed. Guided by identity management theory, the interview data analysis revealed three general themes: development of the interfaith relational identity via the co-creation of a superordinate spiritual and value system; implementation of relational boundaries to prioritize the relational identity; and identification of key milestone decisions (i.e. wedding plans and children socialization coordination) interfaith partners face in their intimate relationships. Contributions, limitations, and directions for future studies on interfaith marital communication are addressed.

This article presents multiple perspectives to illuminate the multifaceted dimensions of honor killing. Various contemporary ethical and theoretical perspectives on honor killing are addressed. The article is organized into four sections: honor killing as contextualized and defined; honor killing as a complex social, moral, and intercultural issue; social ecological and intercultural facework perspectives on honor killing, with an illustrative application; and finally, conclusions and future directions.

Interpretive thematic analysis revealed six themes. Key findings indicate: (1) for both older and younger South Asian Indian American (SAIA) generations, family izzat is of primary importance; (2) the motif of “respect” is central to both SAIA generations' in their narratives of izzat; (3) both older and younger SAIAs use the concealment-preventative and diversion-restorative facework strategies to save face. These findings uncover intergenerational communication challenges concerning the shifting boundary parameters of izzat in the diasporic Indian community in the US.

Ting-Toomey’s identity negotiation theory and Giles’ communication accommodation theory guide this investigation into the meaning construction of “bicultural identity” of Asian/Caucasian individuals and their intergroup communication strategies. Bicultural identity development is a multilayered, complex lived experience. Response analysis to the research questions revealed eight thematic patterns such as bicultural construction of integrated identity, distinctive communication practice, and identity buffering strategies. These patterns culminate to the proposed idea of a “double-swing bicultural identity” model. The study concludes with a discussion on contributions, limitations, and future directions.

Incompatible moral value sets are often expressed through the complexity of intercultural or intergroup communication at various institutional and community reaction levels. While we do not condone honor killing, the social ecological perspective (SEP) provides multi-layered and embedded contextual framing of the situation to understand honor killing. First, this paper contextualizes honor killing and then presents a true story of honor killing. Subsequently, it discusses SEP and applies it to the Banaz Mahmod's killing. It concludes with future theoretical directions.

These terms conjure up images in our mind of individuals who belong to certain social groups in host environments. Basically, their social identities define who they are and how they are treated by others in social interactions. While there is extensive research on refugees and diasporas in three separate but interrelated domains—refugee studies, diaspora studies, and immigrant studies, less scholarly attention has been paid to the conceptual distinctions between refugees and diasporas, among other things. The complexity of refugees and diasporas is explored along with some implications. Most studies are atheoretical in nature, and an intergroup perspective can provide insights into how they engage in identity negotiation and intergroup communication adaptation to host environments. Thus, a theoretical discussion is provided of ...

It also assessed how different self-construal types influence relational response strategies. Four of the six culture-level hypotheses were supported. Overall, US respondents tend to prefer exit and anger voice responses more so than Chinese respondents. Comparatively, Chinese respondents

The PRECA was found to be negatively associated with participants’ communication satisfaction and positively associated with their anxiety following interactions with individuals from other ethnic groups. The PRECA was also found to be a better predictor of these outcomes than the more general measure of communication apprehension, the PRCA‐24 (McCroskey, 1982). However, High ECAs who interacted with a different ethnicity partner did not differ in their communication satisfaction or anxiety from those who interacted with someone of the same ethnicity. Our findings, therefore, provide only mixed support for the utility of the PRECA.
