This paradigm requires the continuous study of diseases to provide the best scientific knowledge for supporting physicians in their diagnosis and treatments in a close way. Within this paradigm, usually, health experts create and publish clinical guidelines, which provide holistic guidance for the care for a certain disease. The creation of these clinical guidelines requires hard iterative processes in which each iteration supposes scientific progress in the knowledge of the disease. To perform this guidance through telehealth, the use of formal clinical guidelines will allow the building of care processes that can be interpreted and executed directly by computers. In addition, the formalization of clinical guidelines allows for the possibility to build automatic methods, using pattern recognition te...

Many people with dementia eventually become totally dependent on others for their care. With proper treatment, symptoms of dementia can be significantly reduced and stabilized. A successful treatment depends on recognizing which symptoms person experiences, making a careful evaluation, and identifying possible causes and methods to treat. Nursing Homes usually host a considerable number of people with dementia. To detect the disease in early stages may allow work on the development of mechanisms to reduce the cognitive impairment. The personalized motivation may help to adapt the patient environment, allowing adequate stimulating events, providing an opportunity for physical and psychosocial activity. The requirement is to study the behavior of patients in order to detect conduct disorders in their routines. This study presents a behavior pattern detection architecture based on the Ambient Assisted Living paradigm, and P...

This paper introduces our preliminary results in the mod-eling of Life Assistance Protocols, a new vision of medical guide-lines and protocols through the lenses of p-Health. In this context the patients role in the process is emphasized, the actions to be per-formed less defined and not only clinical situations considered, but also healthier lifestyle promotion processes accounted for, where the persons preferences and motivations play a key role. We propose a complete framework, balancing on classical clinical guideline models and covering both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the problem, describing it from conceptualization to the execution environment. 1

Nevertheless, their design is not an easy task. Some approaches in the literature are based on using Workflow technology for defining Clinical Pathways. These approaches allow the creation of unambiguous, complete and automatically executable protocols. In addition to this, the use of Process Mining technology can help the design using information from real executions of Clinical Pathways cases. Nevertheless, to ensure a correct continuous evaluation and improvement of care processes, the creation of a tool that allows to know the current status of the Clinical Pathway execution it’s mandatory. In this paper, we present a tool able to compare the designed Clinical Pathways with the real implantation cases in order to detect their differences. This allows Clinical Pathways designers to improve the care protocols making them more adequate...

This paper discusses the design and implementation of a e-DM system which meets the requirements for the integrated chronic disease management following the recommendations of the Disease Management Association and the American Heart Association.

Recent advances make it feasible to move clinical testing nearer to patients and the requesting physicians, thus reducing the time to treatment. Internet technologies can be used to create a virtual laboratory information system in a distributed health-care environment. This allows clinical testing to be transferred to a cooperative scheme of several point-of-care testing (POCT) nodes. Two pilot virtual laboratories were established, one in Italy (AUSL Modena) and one in Greece (Athens Medical Centre). They were constructed on a three-layer model to allow both technical and clinical verification. Different POCT devices were connected. The pilot sites produced good preliminary results in relation to user acceptance, efficiency, convenience and costs. Decentralized laboratories can be expected to become cost-effective.

However, the Internet is still a linear scenario, focused on showing contents and dissociated from the physical world. On the other hand, there are many social groups that don’t know how to use the opportunities that ICT can offer them, such as children. In this scenario, Project Enjoy.IT! designs, develops, and validates an entertainment platform with advanced contents that will set up a practical realization of the new products and services from the Future Internet. Project Enjoy.IT! integrates the physical world as an extension of the virtual world and vice versa. Thus, the project creates an AmI system that is able to act depending on the children’s knowledge and necessities. The platform is based on a Services Choreography that allows an easy, simple integration of the necessary elements to give support to interactive entertainment activities.
