While immediately beneficial, loss of an appendage can lead to a variety of future costs. In many spiders, leg autotomy is common; previous work has sometimes demonstrated autotomy costs in some behaviors, while other times, no costs of autotomy occur. We examined frequency of autotomy in two riparian zone populations of the wolf spider Pardosa valens Barnes, 1959 and then used both mark–recapture work at these sites and laboratory predation trials to determine whether autotomy affected survival. Autotomy occurred in 31% of spiders; males were more likely than females to have a missing leg, but female reproductive status (carrying an egg sac or not) was unrelated to leg loss status. At both sites, survival over 1 week in the field was significantly higher for intact spiders than for spiders missing a leg, for both sexes and both female reproductive states. Additionally, when we p...

Policymakers within the state focused their standards-based reforms on the issue of improving students' academic performance through increasing accountability. In doing so, they did not see these high-stakes policies as a form of punishment for those who fail, but rather, as a tool to focus the education establishment on improving the academic skills and knowledge of all their students. Thus, the retained student is not the primary concern of the policymaker, but rather, the retained student demonstrates the state's system of accountability works. Raising the question as to whether those who support or oppose high-stakes policies such as these should focus their efforts on the agenda setting process rather th...

Here, we identify altered cognitive processing of tactile stimuli in CRPS patients that we propose marks heterogeneity in tactile decision-making mechanisms. In a case-control design, we compared middle and late-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) in response to pseudo-randomised mechanical stimulation of the digits of both hands (including CRPS-affected and non-affected sides) between 13 CRPS patients and 13 matched healthy controls. During a task to discriminate the digit simulated, patients (compared to controls) had significantly lower accuracy and slowed response times but with high between-subject variability. At middle latencies (124-132 ms), tactile processing in patients relative to controls showed decrements in superior parietal lobe and precuneus (that were independent of task demands) but enhanced activity in superior frontal lobe (th...

The patient’s echocardiogram was notable for a left ventricular ejection fraction of 20% to 25%. Physical examination was notable for bibasilar crackles on lung auscultation and lower-extremity edema. The patient was started on intravenous (IV) diuretic therapy, an IV milrinone infusion, and IV calcium therapy (as adjuvant therapy for ionotropic support; unknown dose). Over the next 5 days, she improved clinically and passed 7 liters of urine. On hospital days 6 and 7, she became increasingly somnolent with urinary incontinence, constipation, and decreased gait stability. Obstructive sleep apnea was believed to be the cause of her symptoms at that time, but she failed to improve with bilevel positive pressure ventilation and was transferred for further management. On arrival, she appeared euvolemic and had no focal neurologic deficits on examination but was somnolent (Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale, −3). An electrocardiogram (ECG) was obtained (Figure 1). Question: What diagnosis should be considered?

This study examined survival outcomes after CF-LVAD explantation and OHT using marginal donors. Adults undergoing OHT with or without LVAD explant using marginal donors between 2007 and 2014 were identified in the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients database. A previously validated donor risk score was used to define marginal donors. Patients were stratified into four groups based on utilization of a marginal donor with or without LVAD explantation at OHT. Graft survival was analyzed at 1 and 5 years. Overall, 7,798 patients with OHT were analyzed. Whereas 1,862 patients (24%) underwent direct OHT utilizing marginal donors, only 626 patients (30% [group A]) underwent OHT with LVAD explant (HeartMate II [Thoratec, Pleasanton, CA], n =581, 93%; HVAD [HeartWare, Framingham, MA], n = 45, 7%) and 1,236 (70%) underwent direct OHT (group B). ...

Although medical management is the first line treatment for spondylodiscitis, many patients fail antibiotic therapy and bracing, or present with instability, neurologic deficits, or sepsis, requiring operative debridement and stabilization. High rates of fusion and infection clearance have been reported with anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), but this approach requires a morbid exposure, associated with non-trivial rates of vascular and peritoneal complications. XLIF is an increasingly popular interbody fusion technique which utilizes a fast and minimally invasive approach, sparing the anterior longitudinal ligament, and allowing sufficient visualization of the intervertebral discs and bodies to debride and place a...

The purpose of this study was to compare combination therapy with bevacizumab monotherapy. This was a 2-part randomized phase 2 study. Eligibility criteria included recurrent GBM after radiotherapy and temozolomide, no other chemotherapy for GBM, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0-2. The primary objective (Part 1) was to determine the effect of bevacizumab plus carboplatin versus bevacizumab monotherapy on progression-free survival (PFS) using modified Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology criteria. Bevacizumab was given every 2 weeks, 10 mg/kg; and carboplatin every 4 weeks, (AUC 5). On progression, patients able to continue were randomized to continue or cease bevacizumab (Part 2). Secondary endpoints included objective radiological response rate (ORR), quality of life, toxicity, and overall survival (OS). One hundr...

Plasma sodium, potassium and zinc concentrations were measured in an additional 50 chicks between 2 and 6 months of age. With the exception of calcium, blood constituents did not change significantly with age. Overall, haematocrit was lower and phosphorus and magnesium were slightly higher than previously measured for adults, which is consistent with previous measurements for chicks.

We also investigate the experience of LPEs during the recent financial market downturn. Finally, we discuss the issue of private equity performance measurement and present the most recent findings in the empirical analysis of listed private equity performance by examining its risk and return characteristics. We conclude with an outlook on the listed private equity universe, especially by considering the recent final market turmoil and liquidity dry-out.
