This method constitutes a new atom-, step-, and redox-economical route to 2-arylquinoxalines.

The cascade including benzylamine oxidation, nitro reduction, condensation, and aromatization occurs without any added reducing or oxidizing agent. The method can be extended to other alkylamines as reducing components or 2-nitrobenzamides as oxidizing components when using an iron/sulfur catalyst to afford various diazaheterocycles.
Research projects directed towards ‘Improving Thickener Technology’ have been conducted by the AJ... more Research projects directed towards ‘Improving Thickener Technology’ have been conducted by the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy since 1988 through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association with support from 25 Australian and international mineral processing companies. These projects have resulted in the development of a range of research tools and techniques to address flocculation and thickening issues. Laboratory and plant studies have focused on how key factors, such as mixing intensity, mixing duration and solids concentration, affect flocculation efficiency and, hence, thickener performance. A comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been developed to predict likely full-scale performance under various process conditions, based upon a knowledge of thickener design, plant flows and laboratory assessment of the flocculation behaviour of the feed slurry. Application of this CFD model to problems within specific mineral processing operations has resulted in significant benefits, in one case leading to doubling of a thickener’s throughput. This paper presents an overview of the work conducted during these projects, focusing on the research tools, the nature of the information that has been gained and the implications for thickener performance. Brief details will be presented on research issues currently being investigated.

The cycloaddition reactions of these nitrones with different alkenes were investigated under thermal solvent-free conditions. Considering conversions, yields, and selectivities, alkyl vinyl ethers have proven to be valuable partners to achieve this transformation, which creates a tetrafunctionalized stereogenic quaternary center. From the adducts derived from vinyl ethers, a three-step access to highly functionalized alpha-substituted amino acid derivatives is described.

Such COX deficiency due to the genetic condition leads to heart disease and the Leigh syndrome and is frequently fatal in childhood. Synthesis of cytochrome c oxidase X (SCOX) is a Drosophila orthologue of human SCO2. Here, we generated SCOX-knockdown flies and the full length SCOX transgenic flies to investigate the in vivo roles of SCOX. Our results demonstrated knockdown of SCOX gene in all cells and tissues to be associated with lethality at larval or pupal stages and this correlated with a decrease in ATP level. In contrast, the full length SCOX transgenic flies showed a longer lifespan than wild type flies and control flies carrying Act5C-GAL4 alone and this correlated with an increase in ATP level. Finally, when cultured on paraquat-added medium, full length SCOX transgenic flies also exhibited an elongated lifespan. Therefore, we hypothesized that SCOX plays an important role in ATP production and consumption, which helps to prevent production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and/or impairment of mitochondrial activity under oxidative stress.

The experiments were performed in a differential reactor at a constant temperature of 450 °C and a space velocity of 1.9 m3 gcat−1 h−1 at approximately atmospheric pressure. The effects of CO, CO2, H2O and H2 concentration on WGS reaction rate were determined over both catalysts using selected gas compositions that might be encountered in coal based gasification system of the dry-feed and slurry-feed types and at the backend of conventional fixed-bed and catalytic membrane reactors. It was found that the rates of the WGS reaction (in mol gcat−1 s−1) over two commercial catalysts (referred to as HTC1 and HTC2) at a reaction temperature of 450 °C can be expressed by the following power-law rate models:For HTC1For HTC2It was observed that HTC1 promotes the rate of WGS reaction when the inlet gas consists of higher CO concentration, and lower CO2 and H2 concentration. Due to the less-negative reaction order with respect to CO2, HTC2 was found to be more applicable to the gas streams with higher CO2 levels, which are likely to be found on the retentate side at the backend of a catalytic membrane reactor.

In this paper, we first propose a conceptual multidimensional data model, which is able to represent and capture natural hierarchical relationships among members within a dimension as well as the relationships between dimension members and measure data values. Hereafter, dimensions and data cubes with their operators are formally introduced. Afterward, we use UML (Unified Modeling Language) to model the conceptual multidimensional model in the context of object oriented databases.

First is non-contextual and concerns the evaluation of edge detector performance in terms of detection errors. The second contextual method evaluates the performance of edge detectors in the context of image reconstruction. Both methods study the influence of image characteristics and edge detector properties on detector performance. Five detectors are evaluated and the performance is compared.
