Tove Soiland studied history and philosophy in Zurich. She is a lecturer and visiting professor at various universities and has been offering seminars for women on feminist economics and political theory at a trade union in Zurich for years. In 2008 she did her doctorate at the University of Zurich on "Luce Irigaray's Thinking of Sexual Difference. A third position in the dispute between Lacan and the historists" (Turia/Kant)

The novelty of this form lies in the fact that the authoritarianism of the Corona measures essentially serves the implementation of a new accumulation regime, but in its authoritarianism does not draw on classic insignia of a right-wing fascism, but on left-wing values. The Left, in its unreserved support for this authoritarianism, has thus taken on a role during the Corona crisis that historically has been reserved for the right. The danger of such a coalition between a state that serves capital by authoritarian means and the Left that supports it is that this authoritarianism no longer appears as such because it dresses itself in the guise of leftist values. This new form of totalitarianism is called post-ideological because it seems to renounce a higher ideal by referring to a (supposedly) uniform scientific opinion. Subsequently, any critique of the Corona measures is denied the status of the political, even if it is formulated from an explicitly left perspective.

Soiland demonstrates that such a reference to Luxemburg had occurred within the feminist reception of Luxemburg’s work as early as the late 1970s. The so-called ‘Bielefeld sociologists’, most prominently Veronika Bernholdt-Thomsen, viewed household production and the reproductive labour performed mostly by women within it as being subsumed under the capitalist mode of production and thus subjected to a form of primitive accumulation. This chapter adapts this still current analysis to post-Fordist conditions, characterised by the fact that a portion of once-unpaid female labour has been converted into wage labour. Soiland argues that the world today and the combination of paid and unpaid reproductive labour we find in it represents a new form of subsumption of subsistence production, which does not disappear with the advance of capitalism, but rather expands.

Well, my first reaction was: to do this successfully one should not be trained as a philosopher but rather as an alchemist. – To put this in another way, we might say that economic change might result in some changes in gendered behaviour. At least that’s what I am thinking. Now, what I see as the main aim of gender politics at the universities in German speaking countries, and as the aim of nearly all efforts to achieve gender equality today, is the attempt to influence individual or collective behaviour. The reasons for this and the accompanying problems are what I want to explore in what follows.
