This study aimed to assess trends in cervical and breast cancer screening rates and to analyze socioeconomic inequalities among Korean women from 2005 to 2015. Data from the Korean National Cancer Screening Survey, an annual nationwide cross-sectional survey, were utilized. A total of 19910 women were finally included for analysis. Cervical and breast cancer screening rates increased from 54.8% in 2005 to 65.6% in 2015 and from 37.6% in 2005 to 61.2% in 2015, respectively. Stomach cancer screening rates increased from 40.0% in 2005 to 74.8% in 2015, with an annual percent change of 5.8% [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.2 to 7.5]. Based on the torque readings, the processing of POM/NS composites were found to be easier in comparison to only POM. The FT-IR spectra analysis of the POM/NS nanocomposites showed the presence of peak at approximately 910 cm-1, attributed to the Si-O and C-O groups in NS and POM on the POM/NS nanocomposite. The absorption at these peaks increased on gradually increasing the content of NS. Tensile property testing (tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus) indicated that the tensile strength of POM/NS nanocomposites increases as the NS content increases from 0.5 wt.% to 1.5 wt.%, and sharply dropped when the NS content was more than 2 wt.%. A similar trend was observed for Young's modulus and elongation at break of the nanocomposites. The DSC analysis of the nanocomposite...

Over the last few decades, the most common places of death in South Korea were hospitals. However, Koreans, especially older adults, reportedly prefer to receive terminal care and eventually die at home. This study was conducted to investigate trends in places of death among older Korean adults and factors associated therewith. Data were obtained from the Korean Death Registration Database maintained by the National Statistical Office. Decedents who died after the age of 65 years from 2001 to 2014 were included in the analysis. For descriptive analysis, proportions of places of death were analyzed and were used to plot graphs for visualizing trends during 13-year period. In this study, we attempted to outline unmet palliative care needs of terminal cancer patients and the potential benefits of PCTs as perceived by doctors in Korea. We surveyed 474 doctors at 10 cancer-related academic conferences from June to November 2014 with a self-report questionnaire to assess their perceptions of end-of-life (EOL) care needs and the expected effects of PCTs on caring for terminal cancer patients. Among those surveyed, 440 respondents who completed the entire questionnaire were analyzed. LHWs delivered 2 educational sessions about healthy eating and PA to the intervention arm participants; the control arm attended sessions about colorectal cancer screening. Effectiveness was measured using pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys. Outcomes were: 1) knowing the recommended number of daily servings of F&V, 2) knowing the recommended number of weekly minutes of PA, 3) eating ≥5 servings of F&V daily, and 4) being moderately/vigorously physically active for ≥150 minutes weekly. The authors investigated rates of hypopituitarism resolution and development after transsphenoidal surgery. METHODS Over a 5-year period, 305 transsphenoidal surgeries for NFAs performed at The California Center for Pituitary Disorders were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Patients with preoperative endocrine deficits (n = 153, 50%) were significantly older (mean age 60 vs 54 years; p = 0.004), more frequently male (65% vs 44%; p = 0.0005), and had larger adenomas (2.4 cm vs 2.1 cm; p = 0.02) than patients without preoperative deficits (n = 152, 50%). Of patients with preoperative endocrine deficits, 53% exhibited symptoms. Preoperative deficit rates were 26% for the thyroid axis; 20% and 16% for the male and female reproductive axes, respectively; 13% for the adrenocorticotropic h...

We sought to evaluate the incidence of headache as a presenting complaint in patients undergoing transsphenoidal surgery for various pathologies and to identify factors predicting postoperative improvement. Methods: We conducted a 5-year retrospective review of our first 1015 transsphenoidal surgeries since establishing a dedicated pituitary center. Results: Of 1015 patients, 329 (32%) presented with headache. Of these 329 patients, 241 (73)% had headache as their chief complaint. Headache was most common in patients with apoplexy (84%), followed by Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) (60%). Multivariate analyses revealed diagnosis (P = 0.001), younger age (P = 0.001), and female gender (P = 0.006) to be associated with headache. Of patients presenting with headaches, 11% reported improvement at 6-week follow-up and 53% improved at 6-month follow-up. Multivariate analyses revealed gross total resection (GTR; P = 0.04) and decreased duration of headache (P = 0.04) to be associated with improvement, while diagnosis, age, gender, lesion size, whether headache was a chief complaint, and location of headache were not associated with improvement (P > 0.05). Conclusion: In analyzing over 1000 consecutive patients undergoing transsphenoidal surgery, younger patients, females, and patients with RCCs and apoplexy were more likely to present with headache. Patients who underwent GTR and had shorter duration of headache were more likely to experience headache improvement. This information can be used to counsel patients preoperatively.

Urothelial cancer has served as one of the most important sources of information about the mutati... more Urothelial cancer has served as one of the most important sources of information about the mutational events that underlie the development of human solid maligancies. Although "field effects" that affect the entire bladder mucosa appear to initiate disease, tumors develop along two distinct biological "tracks" that present vastly different challenges for clinical management. Recent whole genome methodologies have facilitated even more rapid progress in the identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in bladder cancer initiation and progression. Specifically, whole organ mapping combined with high resolution, high throughput SNP analyses have identified a novel class of candidate tumor suppressors ("forerunner genes") that localize near more familiar tumor suppressors but are disrupted at an earlier stage of cancer development. Furthermore, whole genome comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and mRNA expression profiling have demonstrated that the two major subtypes of urothelial cancer (papillary/superficial and non-papillary/muscle-invasive) are truly distinct molecular entities, and in recent work our group has discovered that muscle-invasive tumors express molecular markers characteristic of a developmental process known as "epithelialto-mesenchymal transition" (EMT). Emerging evidence indicates that urothelial cancers contain subpopulations of tumor-initiating cells ("cancer stem cells") but the phenotypes of these cells in different tumors are heterogeneous, raising questions about whether or not the two major subtypes of cancer share a common precursor. This review will provide an overview of these new insights and discuss priorities for future investigation.
