The tREXS science instrument is a soft X-ray grating spectrometer that will provide a large field-of-view and unmatched spectral resolving power for extended sources. Each instrument channel consists of a passive, mechanical focusing optic and an array of reflection gratings. The focal plane consists of an array of CIS113 CMOS sensors. tREXS I is currently in the design phase and is being developed for a launch in 2021 to observe diffuse soft X-ray emission from the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. An analysis of instrument optics, gratings, and focal plane camera is discussed.
The semistochastic heat-bath configuration interaction (SHCI) method is a selected configuration ... more The semistochastic heat-bath configuration interaction (SHCI) method is a selected configuration interaction plus perturbation theory method that has provided near-full configuration interaction (FCI) levels of accuracy for many systems with both singleand multi-reference character. However, obtaining accurate energies in the complete basis-set limit is hindered by the slow convergence of the FCI energy with respect to basis size. Here we show that the recently developed basis-set correction method based on range-separated density-functional theory can be used to significantly speed up basis-set convergence. In particular, we study two such schemes which differ in the functional used, and apply them to transition metal atoms and monoxides to obtain total and dissociation energies well converged to the complete basis-set limit within chemical accuracy.

The World Food Programme (WFP) supported the government’s response by providing food aid but was delayed by one month due to inadequate information. To enable faster flood response, WFP partnered with Cloud to Street to develop a near real-time Congo flood monitoring system in collaboration with the government. The system used precipitation information (GSMaP), and satellites (MODIS, Landsat, Sentinel-2, PlanetScope, and Worldview-3) to estimate flood damage and alert stakeholders via WhatsApp Messenger and an online platform. The system was used to assess flood risk of 16,000 refugees, resulting in the recommendation to move refugees from one high risk site (Makotipoko), reducing the flood exposure of up to 7,000 people. Despite limitations of the flood monitoring system (cloud cover, inaccurate rainfall forecasting, and population data), it provides evidence that satellite-based flo...
