Debido a que se trata de una obra por encargo, el lector o espectador espera una obra laudatoria del conquistador. Sin embargo, el dramaturgo, acatándose a las teorÃas literarias de la época, produce una tragicomedia que se vale de lenguaje ambiguo para caracterizar a los dos bandos contrincantes. La obra emplea anfibologÃa o ambigüedad para reflexionar sobre la moralidad de la conquista y, a la vez, exponer de modo velado una condena a la empresa española. Acorde a las convenciones de la época, el drama trata de comprender la realidad mediante el uso de mimesis e identifica el proceso de imitación con la inventio. Arauco domado presenta las posiciones opuestas con respecto a la naturaleza del indio que se discutÃan a lo largo del siglo XVI y demuestra que simpatiza con las ideas de Bartolomé de Las Casas. Este defensor de los indios aboga por un tratamiento cristiano de la población del Nuevo Mundo y sostiene que los indios son seres similares a los españoles. La obra, siguiendo el postulado lascasiano, demuestra que existe un paralelismo entre los personajes españoles y los indÃgenas. Este ensayo propone que la victoria bélica de los españoles se logra a costa de la perversión de su religión.
