I received training in Bioenergetics and Biochemistry at the Department of Chemistry, State University of New York at Albany, New York, USA. I worked with late Professor Tsoo E. King during 1976-1981 on the isolation and characterization of bovine cytochrome c oxidase. I returned to Taiwan in 1981 and was appointed associate professor of the Department of Biochemistry at National Yang-Ming Medical College. I was promoted to full professor in 1985 and served as the Chairman of the department and was then appointed as Dean of Student Affairs during 1985-1991. I was a full professor at the department until 2013. I was recruited as the founding president of Mackay Medical College in August 2009. I completed my 8-year term of the presidency at the end of July 2017. Since August 2017, I have been appointed as the Director of the Center for Mitochondrial Medicine and Free Radical Research at Changhua Christian Hospital, Changhua, Taiwan.

Among them, diltiazem induced the largest amplitude of motility increase. The concentration‐response curve of diltiazem was similar in shape to those of calcium chelators. EGTA, a calcium chelator, potentiated the stimulatory effect of diltiazem while A23187, a calcium ionophore, antagonized it. These observations supported our previous hypothesis that an increased concentration of calcium ion was detrimental to human sperm motility. Whether calcium antagonists could be used in the treatment of subfertile patients awaits further investigation.

A subset of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is refractory to surgery and radioactive iodine ablation. Doxorubicin and sorafenib are the drugs of choice for treating advanced thyroid cancer but both induce adverse effects. In this study, we assessed the anti-cancer activity of 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG) alone and in combination with doxorubicin or sorafenib in PTC cell lines with (BCPAP) and without (CG3) the BRAFV600E mutation. We analyzed cases of SS principal diagnosis (ICD-9:710.2) with a catastrophic illness certificate (CIC) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) outpatient clinics from three cohorts of the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID) in the NHIRD between 2002 and 2011. Significantly, the CISD2 gene is located on human chromosome 4q, where a genetic component for longevity maps. Here we show for the first time that CISD2 is involved in mammalian life-span control. Cisd2 deficiency in mice causes mitochondrial breakdown and dysfunction accompanied by autophagic cell death, and these events precede the two earliest manifestations of nerve and muscle degeneration; together, they lead to a panel of phenotypic features suggestive of premature aging. Our study also reveals that Cisd2 is primarily localized in the mitochondria and that mitochondrial degeneration appears to have a direct phenotypic consequence that triggers the accelerated aging process in Cisd2 knockout mice; furthermore, mitochondrial degeneration exacerbates with age, and the autophagy increases in parallel to the development of the premature aging phenotype. Smoke-induced increased generation of reactive oxygen species may be involved. However, it remains to be clarified how orbital fibroblasts are affected by cigarette smoking. Our study demonstrated that Graves' orbital fibroblasts have exaggerated response to cigarette smoke extract challenge along with increased oxidative stress, fibrosis-related genes expression, especially connective tissue growth factor, and intracellular levels of transforming growth factor-β1 and interleukin-1β. The findings obtained in this study provide some clues for the impact of cigarette smoking on Graves' ophthalmopathy and offer a theoretical basis for the potential and rational use of antioxidants in treating Graves' ophthalmopathy.
