Therefore, we investigated the performance of Ooencyrtus submetallicus (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Trissolcus sp. aff. urichi (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) parasitizing eggs of Nezara viridula (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), considering different ages of the parasitoids and the host. Foi verificada a presença de colônias de percevejos-de-renda em plantios de mandioca localizados na terra indígena Kaxinawá de Nova Olinda, Feijó, estado do Acre. This paper provided a list of all new Brazilian Hexapoda species described in 2020. Furthermore, ... more This paper provided a list of all new Brazilian Hexapoda species described in 2020. Furthermore, based on the information extracted by this list, we tackled additional questions regarding the taxa, the specialists involved in the species descriptions as well as the journals in which those papers have been published. We recorded a total of 680 new Brazilian species of Hexapoda described in 2020, classified in 245 genera, 112 families and 18 orders. These 680 species were published in a total of 2019 articles comprising 423 different authors residing in 27 countries. Only 30% of these authors are women, which demonstrates an inequality regarding sexes. In relation to the number of authors by species, the majority of the new species had two authors and the maximum of authors by species was five. We also found inequalities in the production of described species regarding the regions of Brazil, with Southeast and South leading. The top 10 institutions regarding productions of new species...
Parasitoid wasps from the Aphelinidae family (Hymenoptera) are important control agents of Bemisi... more Parasitoid wasps from the Aphelinidae family (Hymenoptera) are important control agents of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius, 1889) cryptic species, both through reproduction and feeding processes. Identifying native parasitoid species within agricultural systems affected by Bemisia whitefly species is the first step to developing guidelines for the creation and release of biological control agents aiming at this highly damaging pest species complex. Taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses based on morphological and molecular characters, respectively, confirmed the occurrence of Encarsia formosa (Gahan, 1924) in greenhouse tomatoes from Santa Maria, Encarsia porteri (Mercet, 1928) in open-field soybean from Santa Maria, and Eretmocerus mundus Mercet, 1931 in greenhouse tomatoes from São José do Hortêncio, all within Rio Grande do Sul state (South Brazil). This is the first report of En. formosa, En. porteri and Er. mundus parasitising B. tabaci in South Brazil, and the first En. porteri partial mtCOI gene sequence being reported and characterised. The high temperature inside the tomato greenhouses can be a possible cause for the predominance of Er. mundus in São José do Hortêncio, and sex ratios in the surveyed populations point to female and male prevalence within Encarsia and Eretmocerus genera, respectively. The combined use of taxonomic and molecular characterisation highlights the importance of combining both morphological and molecular approaches in the assessment of previously unidentified whitefly parasitoids.

Although T. remus was introduced into Brazil over three decades ago for classical biological control of S. frugiperda, this wasp has not been recorded as established in corn or soybean crops. We used an integrative approach to identify T. remus, combining a taxonomic key based on the male genitalia with DNA barcoding, using a cytochrome c oxidase subunit I mitochondrial gene fragment. This is the first report of natural parasitism of T. remus on S. frugiperda and S. cosmioides eggs at two locations in Brazil. Here, we present the first two South American species of Nealiolus Mason (Hymenoptera, Braconidae... more Here, we present the first two South American species of Nealiolus Mason (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), both reared from weevils damaging plants of economic value: Nealiolus chayohtli Wengrat & Shimbori sp. n. on Phymatophosus squameus feeding in stems of Sechium edule (chayote), and Nealiolus jaboticaba Shimbori & Wengrat sp. n. on Conotrachelus sp. in fruits of Plinia cauliflora (jaboticaba). This parasitoid genus is poorly studied, despite its potential importance as a biological control agent of several pest weevils (Curculionidae), including the cotton boll weevil. With the addition of the two new species, nine species of Nealiolus are known, three of them occurring in the Neotropical region. This study aimed to survey scale insects and natural enemies associated with C. canephora in the city of Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. Two species of mealybugs from the family Coccidae and three from the family Pseudococcidae were collected in different plant structures. Natural enemies collected comprised hymenopteran parasitoids from the families Aphelinidae, Eulophidae, Encyrtidae, and Perilampidae; predator beetles of the family Coccinellidae; dipterans from the family Cecidomyiidae; and thrips of the family Aeolothripidae. El objetivo de este estudio fue desarrollar un método de cría de Bemisia tuberculata en plantas d... more El objetivo de este estudio fue desarrollar un método de cría de Bemisia tuberculata en plantas de yuca para la producción y el mantenimiento continuo de una colonia. La población inicial de B. tuberculata se obtuvo a partir de hojas recogidas de la planta con alta infestación de ninfas. Los adultos obtenidos fueron transferidos de la taza de plástico para jaulas de tul, en diferentes densidades. La densidad de 125 adultos de B. tuberculata por hojas fue el más adecuado para la cría. El método que se propone en este estudio ha demostrado ser eficaz y se recomienda, ya que el nivel de la población se mantuvo estable durante los experimentos.
This paper work recorded the occurrence of Aleurothixus aepim Goeldi in cassava plants in the Wes... more This paper work recorded the occurrence of Aleurothixus aepim Goeldi in cassava plants in the West of Parana, Brazil. The species was first found in February, 2009, in an experimental area at Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná (UNIOESTE), in cassava leaves of the white starch variety. The samples were collected by gathering leaves infested with whitefly nymphs, which are characterized for presenting body coated by white waxy filaments. The material was preserved in 70% ethanol, in glass bottles, and sent for identification. New outbreaks have been recorded in the beginning of 2010 and 2011 in different rural properties located in the city of Marechal Candido Rondon. However, the precise cause of the occurence of A. aepim in this region is not completely clear. In the other production regions of the State, this species has not yet been detected.

The insects were collected in the field and taken to the laboratory where they were identified based on some morphological traits of the species Vatiga manihotae (Drake) and V. illudens (Drake), which are first reported in the aforementioned state.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar diferentes doses do produto a base de azadiractina, Azamax®, na mortalidade da cochonilha Phenacoccus manihoti, em plantas de mandioca. O produto foi aplicado nas doses de 0; 0,1; 0,2; 0,3; 0,4 e 0,5%, sob delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 6 repeticoes, sendo que cada repeticao foi constituida de 15 cochonilhas de 3° instar. A aplicacao do produto nas plantas foi realizada atraves de um pulverizador costal de CO2, com barra de 2 metros e bico tipo leque, com vazao de 200 L ha-1. Apos 7 dias da primeira aplicacao houve a reaplicacao do produto. A avaliacao para constatar a mortalidade dos insetos foi realizada diariamente, durante 14 dias, a partir da primeira aplicacao. A mortalidade foi corrigida pela formula de Schneider-Orelli. Os dados foram transformados em e submetidos a analise de variância (teste F) e analise de regressao 5%. Nas condicoes em que o ensaio foi realizado, o produto Azamax® (azadiractina) na dose de 0,43%, apresentou mortalidade de 64% das cochonilhas P. manihoti, em mandioca.
