I look in turn at the value, the power, and the source of this worldly form of speech.

A few scholars have observed features shared with the psalms of lament, but these studies have been limited in scope and have proved inconclusive in identifying the "I." A comparison between Romans 7 and one of the psalms of lament, namely Psalm 119, reveals a number of significant verbal and conceptual correspondences, which throw fresh light onto previously unclear aspects of the "I"'s monologue. In addition , Paul's wretched "I" is revealed as inhabiting the same symbolic world as the Christ-believers in Rome, experiencing with them the resurrection of lament in Christ.

At the heart of SAA is a bold proposal, which involves interpreting pistis in salvation-oriented contexts, not as “faith,” or “trust,” but as “allegiance” to Jesus the reigning king. The following review article analyzes Bates’s arguments for understanding pistis as “allegiance,” paying close attention to the key lexical, theological, and exegetical aspects of his discussion. Major deficiencies are observed in each of these areas, and, as such, the proposal is judged untenable.

Challenging existing paradigms, which fail to provide both literary coherence and theological plausibility, he develops his own positive theory concerning the ‘I’. Along the way he also re-examines a number of key texts within the letter which have hitherto not been given due weight within the scholarly discussion. This study offers a fresh and satisfying solution to one of the Bible’s most notorious cruxes and contributes to our understanding of the Apostle Paul’s thought. It will be of interest to all scholars and students within the fields of biblical studies and Christian theology.
