The purpose of this topical review is to assess the scientific evidence and provide expert opinion related to nutritional, psychological, and supportive care of women and their infants throughout the prenatal, antenatal, and infant periods. Methods A consensus expert panel of a paediatrician, gastroenterologists, nurses, and dietitians was convened by the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation. This panel critically reviewed literature related to the non-medical management of patients with IBD during preconception, pregnancy, the postnatal period, and the first years of the infant’s life. Statements were developed using an e-Delphi process over two rounds and were confirmed when ≥80% of experts agreed with the statements. Results A total of 19 current...

Patients’ experiences of this have not been researched in IBD.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with adults with Crohn’s Disease from out-patient clinics in the United Kingdom. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim, then analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsFourteen participant interviews were conducted. Three key themes were identified: 1) ‘The new normal’ established through adaptation and acceptance; 2) ‘Energy as a resource’ describing attempts to better manage fatigue through planning and prioritising tasks; 3) ‘Keeping healthy’ encompasses participants’ beliefs that ‘good health’ allows better management of fatigue.ConclusionParticipants establish a ‘new’ normality, through maintaining the same or similar level of employment/education activities. Aims: To explore the lived experience of IBD patients and their family members regarding impacts of IBD on family members and their coping strategies. Methods: Semi-structured, in-depth, online interviews were held via Skype, Microsoft Teams and Zoom from February to June 2020, with 12 purposively selected participants, comprising six IBD patients with their six partners. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim, for inductive thematic data analysis. Results: Four main themes emerged during the analysis under the central theme ‘our relationship with IBD, for better or worse’. The theme ‘our relationship’ revealed the impact of IBD on intimate relationships, family planning, role change as partner and carer, and the importance of honest communicati...

Current evidence is mainly from case studies and includes only about 250 participants globally. We explored how vulval Crohn’s disease affects women’s sexual well-being, and aimed to understand what might be the specific experiences of sexuality in this group Methods Three participants from a phenomenological study exploring sexuality in inflammatory bowel disease have self-reported as diagnosed with vulval Crohn’s disease. Data collected from telephone interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Results Women with vulval Crohn’s disease reported a severe disease course with devastating consequences on their sexuality, and suffered years of delay in their diagnosis. Their experiences were summarised in four main themes: Scarred by Crohn’s, Striving for normality, Waiting too long, and Who’s going to help? Sex posed extreme challenges impose...

Little is known about the causality of low sexual functions scores and their contribution to low quality of life reports. The aim of this study was to explore how intimacy and sexuality is experienced in the context of IBD. Methods This was a phenomenological study guided by van Manen’s methodology. Data were collected from 43 participants from interviews and narrative accounts submitted via Google Forms. Reflection on four existential domains (body, relationships, space and time) and thematic analysis were used to interpret the data. Results Four themes were generated from data analysis: Otherness of the sick body, Interrupted connectedness, Missing out on life fullness and Fragmented openness. These led to the overarching theme Sexuality as lived incompleteness, which reflected the essence of the experiences desc...

The aim of this study was to understand the causes of fatigue in IBD, as well as strategies for managing it from the patients' perspective. Qualitative data, in the form of answers to free-text questions on a self-report questionnaire, were collected from patients attending outpatient clinics. Of the 182 patients who completed the questionnaire, 151 provided answers to the questions about causes and 137 replied to say what helped them. In their responses, patients reported that, in addition to their IBD, their lifestyle and psychological aspects were key factors contributing to fatigue. Two opposing self-management techniques, increasing sleep or undertaking more exercise, were reported as effective in managing IBD-related fatigue. Nurses have a crucial role in acknowledging fatigue as an important issue and in helping patients ...
