This research is a sequential mixed study in which we conducted emotion frequency and content analyses with 20 elderly resident patients in a convalescent hospital. In the emotion frequency analysis, we performed emotion occurrence frequency analysis and clustering to create groups of subjects that showed similar distributions of emotions. The study results found that South Korean senior patients displayed six major emotions: joy, sorrow, anger, surprise, fear, and tranquility, including mixed emotional states. In the emotion content analysis, we used NVivo to categorize and analyze the interview contents based on emotion types. The study results show the characteristics of emotions according to patients’ treatment and recovery, life within narrow boundaries, relationships with new peop...

We investigated the morphology and phase composition of the bone grafts using a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer patterns and tested the compressive strength. Four circular defects of 8 mm in diameter were created on the calvaria of twelve rabbits. One defect was left empty, and each of the other defects was filled with WH, HA, and β-TCP. At 4 and 8 weeks, the specimens were harvested to evaluate for the new bone formation and the remaining bone grafts. Regarding the biomechanical properties, the three grafts had a similar micropore size, and WH showed nanopores. The compressive strength of WH was higher than HA and β-TCP without statistical significance. The radiological and histomorphometric analyses demonstrated that the new bone formation was similar among the grou...

However, there is no report of a relationship between bioenergetic activity of mitochondria and microtubule stability in mammalian cells. This study aimed to investigate this relationship. We treated HEK293 cells with microtubule stabilizers (Taxol and Epothilone D) or a microtubule disturber (vinorelbine), and performed live-cell imaging to determine whether mitochondrial morphology and bioenergetic activity depend on the microtubule status. Treatment with microtubule stabilizers enhanced the staining intensity of microtubules, significantly increased ATP production and the spare respiratory capacity, dramatically increased mitochondrial fusion, and promoted dynamic movement of mitochondria. By contrast, bioenergetic activity of mitochondria was significantly decreased in cells treated with the microtubule disturber. Our data suggest that microtubule stability promotes mitochondrial functional activi...
