I have 26 years of experience with marine mammal research. My expertise includes abundance estimation and population assessment of cetaceans and satellite telemetry of large whales. I am currently aResearch Associate with a joint position at Cascadia Research Collective (CRC), at Marine Ecology and Telemetry Research (MarEcoTel) and at NOAA’s Marine Mammal Laboratory (MML). I am also the president of Instituto Aqualie. My work focuses on the development of satellite tagging methods for large cetaceans, including assessing potential physical/physiological effects of tags and tag deployment to assess movements, habitat use and overlap with anthropogenic threats of various species. I am also involved in research to assess the effect of human activities on cetaceans with the ultimate goal of improving their conservation status. I have been a member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group for over 20 years and have helped IUCN with the Red List Assessment of various cetacean species. I am a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission and have recently been appointed Vice-Chairman of the Committee.
