The term authorial poetics implies characteristics and scope of Lynch's work which include filmic and historical context, artistic intertext, technical and thematic aspect of his authorial style. In this paper Lynch is considered the principal author of his films. His creative freedom is evidenced by the production conditions of his films. The contextualisaton of Lynch's work highlights possible ties with New Hollywood and sketches the development of his career from the study of fine arts to his affirmation as a film author.
