Beth H U D N A L L Stamm
Beth Hudnall Stamm, Ph.D., educated in psychology and statistics at Appalachian State University (BS, MA) and University of Wyoming (Ph.D.), took medical retirement in 2012 due to repetitive brain injuries. During her career, she held appointments at the Idaho State University Institute of Rural Health, VA National Center for PTSD, Dartmouth Medical School and the University of Alaska. She also was an Associate Animal Behavior Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and on the Delta Society Service Animal Trainer Registry. Beth received awards from the International Society for Traumatic Stress, the American Telemedicine Association, the National Rural Health Association, and from the American Psychological Association. Her work focused on traumatic stress, with particular interest in the indirect effects of caregiving on workers. She is the author of the ProQOL, which has been translated into more than 20 languages and the initiator of the concept of compassion satisfaction. With over 100 professional publications, her books include Secondary Traumatic Stress (1995, 1999, Sidran Press, English, German & Japanese editions), Measurement of Stress, Trauma and Adaptation (1996, Sidran Press), Cultural Issues and the Treatment of Trauma and Loss (1999, Brunner/Mazel) and The ProOQL Manual (2005, 2010). Beth’s work is used worldwide in diverse fields including health care, disaster responding, media, veterinary medicine and the military. She makes her home in a log house in the mountains of Montana with her historian-husband. She was partnered for 15 years with her service dog, Sophie, who died in 2019. Today she spends her time writing, gardening and shoveling snow.
