I graduated in Modern History and then in Documentation at the "Sapienza" University in Rome, where I also obtained a Ph.D. in Italian Studies. I teach Literary Subjects as well as History and Philosophy in High Schools. I participated in some conferences as a speaker and in several poetry readings. I published, in addition to stories, poems, literary and historical essays in anthologies, paper magazines and on the web, the novel 'TrePadri' (2002), the collection of poems 'Arca allo sbando?' (2004), the dialectal poem 'Er davenì' (2007), the novel 'When the sharks eat wind' (2012) and the collection of poems in dialect and in italian language 'Fratelli mia' (2015). In 2017 the non-fiction book "Del nostro caos e della solitudine", which concerns the literary memory of the internment of Italian soldiers in Nazi concentration camps, was published.

The paper presents the part of Vincenzo Rabito's memoir "Terra matta", which concerns the First World War. The text is analyzed both on the historical and on the linguistic-literary side.
Vengono presi in esame quattro autori di differente estrazione sociale e culturale, accomunati dall’aver avversato i Borbone perché credevano nel progresso morale e civile che sarebbe derivato dall’unificazione dell’Italia e, dopo l’unificazione, dall’aver subìto una struggente delusione.
Bruno Pelaggi detto Mastru Brunu, poeta semicolto, di professione scalpellino. E’ suo il testo poetico «Littera allu dimuonu, a cui si deve il titolo del presente intervento e che esprime al massimo grado il disincanto e la rassegnazione attraverso un disperato e paradossale appello al demonio. Questa scelta si inscrive nella tendenza (che si manifesta nel deserto della società civile) a rivolgere le istanze di giustizia molto in alto: al ministro, al re o, addirittura, al padreterno e, per contrappunto al principe del male.
L’abate Antonio Martino, a differenza di Bruno Pelaggi, è un autore colto e discende da una agiata famiglia borghese.
Vincenzo Ammirà, considerato il maggiore poeta dialettale calabrese dell’Ottocento, partecipò ai moti del 1848, e nel 1860 seguì Garibaldi a Soveria Mannelli. Dopo essere stato perseguitato dal governo borbonico, sarà emarginato anche del nuovo Stato italiano, che gli negherà una cattedra nel liceo del suo paese.
Giuseppe Monaldo, poeta colto, autore di versi in lingua e in dialetto, sacerdote liberale, per le sue idee politiche fu inviso alla curia e all’autorità borbonica.
Malauguratamente, i loro versi ancora oggi non cessano, per molti aspetti, di rivelarsi attuali nei contenuti, al di là delle qualità specificamente culturali e letterarie. Ciò spiega il successo che tali componimenti poetici riscuotono tra giovani e meno giovani meridionali dei nostri giorni, che si riappropriano con orgoglio e rinnovata consapevolezza della poesia dialettale di protesta civile elaborata dai loro antenati.
L’intervento prende l’avvio da una rilettura di Quello che resta da fare ai poeti, saggio che, sebbene pubblicato postumo, rappresenta uno dei fondamentali punti di riferimento della poetica sabiana. Nella prospettiva di una «poesia onesta» viene evidenziata la tematica dell’amicizia, come soggetto nodale dei versi sabiani. In questo senso si comprende anche come l’interventismo di Saba, in occasione della Grande Guerra, possa convertirsi, in sede di realizzazione poetica, in antimilitarismo. L’impegno civile e la compassione per gli umili, rinvenibili nella poesia sabiana, sono parte di una dimensione etica che proietta l’amicizia verso un’affettività rivolta a tutto il mondo, con peculiare coinvolgimento per quello animale. Sul modello della formula coniata da Contini («psicoanalitico prima della psicoanalisi»), sembra dunque possibile concludere che Saba fu «etologico prima dell’etologia».
