Thanks to IoT and AI, a static model evolves as a constantly updated system that is in connection with the real environment, thanks to data provided by sensors placed in it. In this paper the possibility of applying this system to complex infrastructures, such as port areas, is analysed. It has been chosen to apply it to a compact port area in order to be able to use this system, to investigate the different possibilities that it offers and to then be able to use it for larger port areas. The case study is located in the Ventotene Island, a small island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in front of the coast of central Italy, which is characterized by a considerable number of visitors during the summer season and a significantly reduced attendance during the rest of the year. It has...

In this field, the aim of the paper is to promote a new production paradigm that enables an integrated process from the design phase to the production of high-performance building components, to their “tailor-made installation” for the efficiency enhancement of the national residential building stock, reducing resource consumptions, costs, construction time and the associated environmental impact. The methodological approach is based on three key elements: digitalisation, production and performance. Recent technologies make it possible to achieve important goals, through the creation of the digital cataloguing of existing buildings, advanced dynamic simulations, improved energy performance for building stock and industrial production chain optimisation of the construction sector according to off-site construction criteria. This strategy was tested...

The issue pertains to the absence of an industrial approach to production in general and, on the other, a lack of culture that invests in the adoption of equal terms for the client, the productive enterprises, the sector operators, citizens and young people (university students above all). A production, that is somewhat deliberately blind, which speculates on the environment to save money and ends up polluting it and, in order to save money, it leaves waste everywhere, a tangible testimony of economic exploitation, but also of a lack of culture on everyone’s part. The issue is much more complex in the building sector, which not only traditionally suffers from delays when compared to any other ...

In particular, the ageing population affects different aspects of society, involving not only health, social assistance and welfare policies but also the re-thinking of settlement systems and housing offer, essential components to face social discomfort. The book deals with the results of the three years PRACTICE Research Project, that aims at outlining the interactions between built up environments and the quality of life of the elderly population and singling out building and planning strategies for an effective integration

The PRACTICE research project deals with the outlining of the interactions between built up environments and the quality of life of the elderly population with the aim to single out building strategies for effective integration. The paper deals with the partial results of the Research, which has reached its last year of activity. In particular, an assessment tool for the quality of life of the elderly is presented and two case studies: an NZEB project to be used for social housing and a proposal for the regeneration of existing buildings for co-housing, carried out by means of a participatory method.

The case study is focused on Rinascimento III in Rome, an area consisting of 16 eight-floor buildings with 216 apartment units powered by 70% of self-renewable energy. The combined use of integrated dynamic analysis algorithms has allowed the evaluation of different scenarios of energy efficiency intervention aimed at achieving a virtuous energy management of the complex, keeping the actual internal comfort and climate conditions. Meanwhile, the objective is also to plan and deploy a cost-effective IT (information technology) infrastructure able to provide reliable data using edge-computing paradigm. Therefore, the developed methodology led to the evaluation of...

In detail, a water source heat pump manufactured by Robur (GAHP-WS) has been used as a reference device for building the simulation model within the MATLAB-Simulink environment. Thereafter, the simulation results have been validated by the experimental campaign, testing on field and in actual operating conditions the heat pump. Specifically, the model has been developed by implementing the WaterAmmonia mass and energy balances for each component. It is able to evaluate fuel consumption, efficiency in terms of GUE, required thermal power from the cold heat sink as well as the water outlet temperature at the evaporator, once the heating load is used as the main input. The experimental campaign for the model calibration and validation has been carried out over the winter...
