The basis for determining the temperatu re of gas using ultrasound is the proportionality of the spee d of sound in gas, with the square root of the temp rature. Both pulse-echo and transmission methods are used for th e determination of the time that it takes an acoust ic pulse across the region of interest. Pulse echo phase lag techniques are used for the study of the effect of convective flux over arbitrary shape surfaces with temperature contrast. A Cartesian scanner is used to sweep the acoustic beam over the surface with normal incidence, at con stant distance from it. In this case the thermo aco ustic image is obtained directly, showing significant differenc s depending on whether the surface is...

These have been used to present a graphic multi-dimensional comparison of the adjusted mean consumption of 22 food groups.Subjects:In total, 35 955 men and women, aged 35–74 years, participating in the EPIC nested calibration study. Results:Although wide differences were observed across centres, the countries participating in EPIC are characterised by specific dietary patterns. Overall, Italy and Greece have a dietary pattern characterised by plant foods (except potatoes) and a lower consumption of animal and processed foods, compared with the other EPIC countries. France and particularly Spain have more heterogeneous dietary patterns, with a relatively high...

Despite temporal and spatial separations between initial isolations, three of the phages (Bcep1, Bcep43, and Bcep781, designated the Bcep781 group) exhibit 87% to 99% sequence identity to one another and most coding region differences are due to synonymous nucleotide substitutions, a hallmark of neutral genetic drift. Phage BcepB1A has a very different genome organization but is clearly a mosaic with respect to many of the genes of the Bcep781 group, as is a defective prophage element in Photorhabdus luminescens . Functions were assigned to 27 out of 71 predicted genes of Bcep1 despite extreme sequence divergence. Using a lambda repressor fusion technique, 10 Bcep781-encoded proteins were identified for their ability to support homotypic interactions. While head and tail morphogenesis genes have retained canonica...

Similarly, high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), the precursor stage for cervical cancer, represents a growing health problem among younger women as the HSIL management regimes that have been developed are not fully effective. From the etiological point of view, the presence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has been demonstrated to play a crucial role for developing cervical malignancies, and viral DNA has been detected in 99.7% of cervical tumors at the later stages. CIGB-300 is a novel cyclic synthetic peptide that induces apoptosis in malignant cells and elicits antitumor activity in cancer animal models. CIGB-300 impairs the Casein Kinase (CK2) phosphorylation, by targeting the substrate's phosphoaceptor domain. Based on the perspectives of CIGB-300 to treat cancer, this "first-...
