A stylistic analysis is conducted to unravel the design agilities of Margaret Atwood's novel "The Handmaid's Tale". It tries to investigate her stylistic traits whereby much of the time her words seem to cloak or obscure what really happened. By adopting Sara Mill's Model, the researcher attempts to reveal the ideology and power relations that underpin a literary text from different levels (according to the model) word, phrase, and discourse. The evidence seems to be strong that the model, however, has identifiable functions which contribute to the effective meaning of the novel. On this basis, it may be inferred that these elements trigger and play significant roles in passing the intention of the writer across.

Politics is a dominant area that exists in the real world. Sometimes from the political attitudes, we stick to the options we construct. Politicians regularly make full use of language innovatively with the intention of affecting their recipients" emotions and having their faithfulness. This paper sheds new light on the representation of persuasive indicators in political speeches, interpreting them in terms of critical stylistics bearing in mind that persuasion is part of discourse power. In view of this, persuasion can be detected according to the criteria of critical stylistics. It is hypothesized that it is possible to apply critical stylistic views to examine power relations and how such relations lead to persuasive stances. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, Bush"s three selected political speeches were selected as samples.

Sometimes linguistic expressions are perceived from the appropriately deeprooted and conventionalized correlation of a certain form with a specific pragmatic meaning (conventionalized pragmatic expressions). These expressions do not count upon expectations about the nature of the context; but others are not, i.e. there should be a context. This study aims at proving that stylistics plays a vital role in conversational pragmatics taking into account that conversation is a linguistic social communication. Language use, as a result of stylistic choices, is a variety of effective connotative and denotative devices by which people think of contextually existing knowledge as a crucial component of encoding and decoding meanings. It is hypothesized that certain stylistic choices reveal mutual (shared) knowledge that has a remarkable influence upon human communication. The findings show that conversational pragmatics is a reflection of the correlation between stylistic choices and context. An addresser who proposes an utterance to be inferred in a specific manner must also assume the addressee to be ready for providing a context that permits that interpretation to be captured because contexts work as motives for generating certain linguistic expressions (stylistic choices). An incompatibility between the context anticipated by the addresser and the one used by the addressee may give rise to a misinterpretation and then leads to miscommunication.

This book explores the intricate relationship between language and meaning within the context of religious discourse, focusing on the multi-layered sermon of Fatima. Chapter One sets the foundation by examining cognitive theories of meaning and the unique features of religious language and discourse. It delves into how sermons transcend mere preaching, establishing a comprehensive framework for understanding religious communication. Chapter Two navigates the concept of transparency and opacity in Fatima's sermon, dissecting various dimensions such as lexical, cognitive, and stylistic opacity. It highlights how these elements contribute to the sermon’s depth and complexity, analyzing implicit evaluations, narrator reliability, and the use of figurative language. Chapter Three introduces the role of mental spaces in interpreting Fatima's sermon, investigating how content words and hypothetical constructs shape understanding. This chapter emphasizes the cognitive processes involved in comprehending religious narratives. Chapter Four utilizes conceptual blending theory to offer novel insights into Fatima's sermon. It examines different blending techniques, including simplex, mirror, single-scope, and double-scope blending, and their application in religious themes, rhetorical devices, and persuasive strategies. The dissertation concludes by synthesizing these findings, providing a holistic view of the linguistic and cognitive mechanisms that underpin religious discourse.
