Publications were included if they described the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and functional outcome of this syndrome. Seven articles with a total of 28 cases met the eligibility criteria, all of which were retrospective case studies. The most common cause of gluteal compartment syndrome was prolonged immobilization. Diagnosis was based on either clinical presentation or measurement of compartmental pressures. Treatment most commonly involved surgical decompression (71% of cases). Functional outcome was assessed differently among the various studies.

This qualitative study evaluated the tissue handling properties of human tibialis posterior tendons prepared using a patented process to improve allograft remodeling and ligamentization under differing cryoprotectant incubation times over 60-min rehydration. Tendons that had been incubated for 8 h had smaller diameters than those that were incubated for 2 h (8.5 1.5mm vs. 9.1 1.3mm, p 0.02). Qualitative tissue handling property results indicated that the 8-h incubation had a negative affect on tissue color. Both incubation time and rehydration time influenced tensile stiffness, compressive resilience, and ease of tissue handling for allograft preparation with the 8-h group displaying poorer results. Plasma levels of endogenous cardiotonic glycosides increase in several disease states, such as essential hypertension and uremia. Low concentrations of ouabain, which do not inhibit Na+/K+-ATPase, induce cell proliferation. The mechanisms of ouabain-mediated response remain unclear. Recently, we demonstrated that in opossum kidney (OK) proximal tubular cells, low concentrations of ouabain induce cell proliferation through phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt) in a calcium-dependent manner. In the present study, we identified ERK as an upstream kinase regulating Akt activation in ouabain-stimulated cells. Furthermore, we provide evidence that low concentrations of ouabain stimulate Na+/K+-ATPase-mediated 86Rb uptake in an Akt-, ERK-, and Src kinase-dependent manner.
