The use of fossil fuels for energy needs is highly discouraged due to its depleting nature and also for its contribution for greenhouse gases emission to the environment. So there is a need to find out an alternative fuel to fulfill the energy demand of the world. Biodiesel is one of the best available sources to fulfill the energy demand of the world. Renewable and carbon neutral biodiesel are necessary for environmental and economic sustainability. Biodiesel for agro products is one such fuel source, which is viable and expanding as an alternate source for fossil fuels.A vast majority of the scientists reported that short-term engine tests using vegetable oils as fuels were very promising but the long-term test results showed higher carbon built up and lubricating oil contamination is resulting in engine failure. They concluded that vegetable oils, either chemically altered or blended with diesel to prevent ...

Renewable energy applications have brought about significant changes in the Indian energy scenario. The identification and efficient use of various renewable energy resources are the thrust areas in energy development. Wind energy is one of the most environment friendly, clean and safe energy resources. The wind energy will continue to be the biggest renewable energy sector in any country in terms of both installed capacity and total potential. This paper reviews some important factors and techniques to be considered for wind turbine installations such as the wind energy resource assessment techniques, environmental factors, grid integration factors, control strategies, impact of offshore wind turbines and hybrid energy technologies, hydrogen production techniques, feed-in tariff mechanism, modeling of wind turbine components including generators, performance improvement techniques. The cost and economic feasibility of the wind energy conversion system as well as the control strategies of wind turbine generators have also been discussed.

Parabolic trough concentrators are widely used in power generation plants and industrial process heating application as it can operate in the low and medium temperature. This is achieved by the selection of suitable heat transfer fluid in the receiver tube of the concentrator. The thermophysical properties of the working fluid plays an important role in enhancing the overall efficiency of the collector. The conventional heat transfer fluid used are water, ethylene glycol and Theminol oil which operate in the low temperature range. But recent researches in the field reveals that different type of nanofluid, can increase the working temperature of the heat transfer fluid and enhance the thermal conductivity and heat transfer properties of the fluid. This paper reviews the type of nanoparticles suspended in the based fluid forming a nanofluid, preparation techniques, their thermoophysical properties which make it suitable for replacing the conventional heat transfer fluid in the PTC.

There are numerous amounts of research being performed on aerofoils of wind turbines. Initially, I have done a brief literature survey on wind turbine aerofoil. This project involves the selection of a suitable aerofoil section for the proposed wind turbine blade. A comprehensive study of the aerofoil behaviour is implemented using 2D modelling. NACA 4412 aerofoil profile is considered for analysis of wind turbine blade. Geometry of this aerofoil is created using GAMBIT and CFD analysis is carried out using ANSYS FLUENT. Lift and Drag forces along with the angle of attack are the important parameters in a wind turbine system. These parameters decide the efficiency of the wind turbine. The lift force and drag force acting on aerofoil were determined with various angles of attacks ranging from 0° to 12° and wind speeds. The coefficient of lift and drag values are calculated for 1×105...

A modest experimentation in a sustainable domain had been inculcated at SAINTGITS, a much sought academic institution at Kottayam, in the state of Kerala, India. The campus houses multiple high rise buildings and a plenty of other small structures. The iconic structure, the Central Lecture Complex (CLC) exhibits its uniqueness with an arc shaped plinth which houses 3 stories to accommodate several conventional lecture rooms, faculty cabins, sophisticated seminar halls and other essential amenity spaces. It provides natural shade to the SAINTGITS Amphi theatre, structured and maintained at the eastern side. The proposed green facade retrofit on to the East and the West facing walls of CLC has improved the indoor operative temperature and hence, an approximate 15% reduction has been estimated in the bui...

The atmospheric wind and the diurnal dry bulb temperature are the main factors which govern the pollutant dispersion. This work quantifies the wind assisted deposition of PM2.5 and the natural atmospheric cleansing by a massive green façade drape. The proposed leaf foliage covers the entire South and the West facing walls of a six storied built structure (Visvesvaraya Block) at SAINTGITS, a prominent Technological Institution at Kottayam, Kerala State, India. Whilst the south blowing winds assist the deposition of PM2.5 on to the façade foliage, the removal rate of the pollutants is directly proportional to the stomata opening and the humidity. This case study clearly depicts the natural capability of green façade retrofits to cleanse the atmosphere, thus helps to attain one of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) o...

Modest initiatives are aplenty to achieve energy efficiency in built structures. In this paper, we have performed a preliminary study on an existing building at SAINTGITS, a renowned academic institution at Kottayam, Kerala state, India. The projected energy loads and other related energy saving attributes were established for the proposed design through retrofits. The four stage analyses inferred that the retrofit with adequate air flushing column had reduced the energy demand and the fossil fuel dependence of the existing built structure. This sustainable approach will certainly benefit the ever growing community at tropical climes.
