L'archeoastronomia è una scienza piuttosto recente (nata nel XIX secolo e sviluppatasi negli anni... more L'archeoastronomia è una scienza piuttosto recente (nata nel XIX secolo e sviluppatasi negli anni '60 del novecento), che combina l'astronomia (mediante la simulazione dei cieli antichi) con i rilievi archeologici. Si potrebbe quindi dire che essa studia (oltre agli antichi documenti astronomici, con particolare riferimento ad antiche testimonianze di eclissi, supernove ed altri eventi astrali) l'allineamento di siti archeologici ai fenomeni celesti (solstizi ed equinozi, lunistizi ecc.). Questa però è solo la parte più famosa (e spettacolare) di questa disciplina: il conoscere gli orientamenti serve a ben poco se non è accompagnato da un profondo studio del contesto in cui l'allineamento viene realizzato. Vanno quindi prese in esame in primo luogo le cosmologie in uso nel periodo oggetto di studio (miti che si confondono inevitabilmente con quelli del pantheon delle divinità dell'epoca: non dobbiamo dimenticare che per gli antichi i corpi celesti erano a tutti gli effetti degli dei). Tale parte della disciplina si trova quindi al confine con lo studio dei miti antichi e con l'antropologia: spesso infatti per riuscire a comprendere il senso di quegli antichi racconti non basta analizzarli all'interno della propria cultura, ma diventa necessario ricorrere allo studio comparato di mitologie anche molto remote ed apparentemente senza alcun collegamento. Un esempio di questo tipo di approccio lo troviamo nell'opera di Giorgio De Santillana: Il Mulino di Amleto (Adelphi): uno studio monumentale in cui vengono presi in esame miti di ogni cultura del globo onde poterne ricavare un " modello " del cosmo, visto secondo gli occhi degli antichi. A questo proposito si è obiettato più volte che un simile atteggiamento rischia di risultare poco oggettivo, pescando materiale da realtà inevitabilmente prive di alcuna relazione. Cercare quindi di " cucire insieme " un discorso comune (a detta dei critici) finirebbe inevitabilmente per essere una forzatura priva di basi reali. Va però detto che non ci stiamo occupando di arte, architettura o poesia (discipline che inevitabilmente possono seguire percorsi diversissimi a seconda della civiltà presa in esame): stiamo invece parlando dell' " osservazione del cielo " , fatta tra l'altro con metodi " pre-scientifici " e quindi con occhi primitivi ed ingenui. Detto in altre parole, non bisogna scomodare misteriose influenze comuni per spiegare le analogie tra questi miti lontani: lo " spettacolo celeste " davanti agli occhi degli antichi era comune in ogni parte del mondo, e comune era ovviamente la tendenza a descriverlo con esempi concreti, propri della vita di tutti i giorni. Ovvio quindi che le metafore adottate fossero spesso molto simili, visto che condiviso da tutti i popoli era il background di vita vissuta cui attingere. Ecco quindi spiegato il motivo per cui nel cielo venivano viste macine da mulino con i buoi attaccati, fiumi colmi di pesci, voli di uccelli e cacciatori pronti a scoccare la propria freccia. Per fare un esempio eloquente, basti citare il simbolismo delle Pleiadi, minuscolo asterismo lungo la Via Lattea. L'aspetto compatto di questa mini-costellazione impediva di variarne la forma, unendola con altri corpi celesti vicini. La sua localizzazione sulla Via Lattea , che proprio in quel punto trova una specie di " strozzatura" in cui risulta meno brillante, portò gli antichi a vedere questo asterismo, ad esempio,
