Arterial stiffness is an initial sign of structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the gold standard for non-invasive evaluation of aortic stiffness and a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. Curcumin is a major component of turmeric with known anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. Since arterial stiffness is affected by inflammation and oxidative stress, it may be improved by curcumin supplementation. The purpose of this clinical trial was to investigate the potential effects of curcumin on improving arterial stiffness in patients with metabolic syndrome. This placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted among metabolic syndrome patients. Sixty-six eligible individuals were randomly assigned to active intervention or control groups. The active intervention group received curcumin supplement at a dose of 500 mg daily for 12 weeks, wh...

[1] for their interest and knowledgeable comments on our study. We have followed the PRISMA guidelines according to the most recent research standards (page 3 of the article). PICOS was also used in the study design (amendments are made on page 2). While it is not compulsory to submit all systematic reviews at PROSPERO, all the principles mentioned in PROSPERO were followed. In the corrected version of the paper [2], we have clarified that no restrictions were placed on the gender, race, and geographical distribution of the individuals enrolled in the study. However, age restrictions were places such that the studies carried out in subjects with a mean age of ≥17.5 years old were included. Also, the type of supplementation has been corrected to include all types of vitamin D supplementation and not just oral vitamin D supplementation. According to the Cochrane handbook, including multiple comparisons from one study with...

This review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the role of beetroot inorganic nitrate supplementation on adults' cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature review of articles published without time limitation until November 2020 in PubMed, Embase, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and gray literature databases. We included the original randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in which the effect of beetroot inorganic nitrate supplementation on endothelial function, arterial stiffness, and blood pressure was studied. RESULTS 43 studies were included for qualitative synthesis, out of which 27 were eligible for meta-analysis. Beetroot inorganic nitrate supplementation significantly decreased Arterial Stiffness (Pulse Wave Velocity (-0.27 m/s, p=0.04)) and increased Endothelial...

The previous studies indicate that l-carnitine deficiency in septic patients and causing mitochondria dysfunction and worsening metabolic disorder. Reducing mortality in sepsis by nutritional supplements may help mitigate the risk of clinical outcomes in sepsis patients. Methods Our systematic search to find relevant studies was performed up to March 2020 , using ISI Web of Science, Google Scholar, EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases. In this systematic review, the aim was to assess whether l-carnitine or levocarnitine may reduce the risk of mortality in patients with sepsis. Result Ten articles were included in our systematic review. The results of the review showed that plasma carnitine levels were significantly associated with the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score (SOFA) (p<0.001). On the other hand, ot...

The prevalence of obesity has risen significantly across the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.Omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acids with several beneficial effects on diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, bipolar disorder, and asthma. The present study aimed to assess the levels of omega-3 fatty acids in subjects with various body mass indices (normal weight, overweight, and obese) and waist circumference (no risk, high-risk, and extremely high-risk). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 151 subjects, including 58 men and 93 women (age range: 18-65 years), who were randomly selected from the patients attending the nutrition clinics in Mashhad, Iran at 2014. The participants were divided into t...

Methods: fifty NAFLD patients including 33 males and 17 females aged 18-65 year, were recruited. Subjects attended after diagnosis based on ultrasound imaging, with at least 10 hour fasting, before and after Ramadan who were been fasting for at least 10 days. A fasting blood sample was obtained, blood pressure was measured and body mass index(BMI) and fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) were calculated. Lipid profile, fasting blood sugar (FBS),insulin, ALT and AST enzymes were analyzed on all blood samples. Result: There was a significant increase in HDL-c in females and higher total plasma cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) and FBS in both gender while lower systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and ALT decreasing after Ramadan (P 0.05, t test). Conclusion:...

But, in the current situation, with the increasing scarcity of water in most parts of the world, the use of this policy has been increasingly taken into consideration. In this regard, this study investigates the current status of water exchange on the downstream of Shirvan Barzoo dam in North Khorasan province. The results of this study show that in the current situation there are unofficial and dispersed water exchanges among the farmers, and more than 45% of the interviewees exchanged water that about 70% of them as buyers and 38% as seller have contributed. The cost of used water from the dam across different areas is also equivalent to 472 Rials per cubic meter. On average, 56% of the farmers tend to sell water at an average price of 3560 Rials and 48% of the f...

The search terms were performed from January 2000 to January 2018, only randomized clinical trials (RCT) in human subjects were considered, with no language restrictions. The electronic databases used in this study were: PubMed; Cochran library; Embase; and Scopus. Two independent expert reviewers carried out data extraction according to Cochrane recommendations. Only four RCTs were found in relation to the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the coronary artery disease. In these 299 patients, vitamin D supplementation had significant favorable effects on Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) (− 2.96, p = 0.02) and Parathyroid hormone (PTH) (− 4.05, p

Inflammation is a major problem among TBL patients which is in association with severity of illness and mortality in brain trauma patients, especially in subdural hemorrhage and epidural hemorrhage cases. A high percentage of adults admitted to the intensive care unit with critical conditions are diagnosed with vitamin D-deficiency, this deficiency may induce impaired immune responses and increase the risk of infections. Vitamin D intervention has been shown to modulate pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in non-critically ill patients, but to date, there is no substantial data on the effectiveness of vitamin D for the improvement of immune function in traumatic brain injury patients.Methods/design A randomized clinical trial (RCT) will be performed on 74 Iranian adults 18-65 years old with brain trauma, and will be treated daily by vitamin D su...

A cross-sectional, randomized study carried out on a sample of 435 prisoners. Questionnaires including gender, age, types of food intake and type of crime were completed. Anthropometric indices were measured on the base of WHO standards. Two weeks food menu of the prison was checked. The outcomes were analyzed using SPSS. The mean BMI value for male and female prisoners was 24.5 and 28.3 kg / respectively. The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity were 13.8%, 5.5% and 1% m2 respectively. The prevalence of underweight was significantly more in men (p<0.05) compared with women. In contrast, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was much more in women compared with men. Inadequate supply of calories for men and protein for all the prisoners was recognized in the prison food menu. Results from this study showed that malnutrition risk was high in Mashhad central prison especially for male prisoners.
