This owes to the fluid nature of the concept of ecopolitics which is still in its nascent stage, at the same time occasionally claiming its root to be rooted in antiquity. The present paper, focusing on the complex and even paradoxical relationship between ecopolitics and modernity, attempts to relocate ecopolitics, and for that matter, the green thoughts and ideas across the broad canvass of the modern ideologies. This exercise is expected to give an insight into the relationship between the modern ideologies and ecopolitics. For this purpose, the paper is broadly divided in to three sections. The first section attempts a conceptualization of the concept of ecopolitics; the second section explores across the broad canvass of modern ideologies and attempts to explore the Green -ness or otherwise of the various ideologies in question. The third an...

Following Cox, therefore, the present study perceives social movements as articulations of situated rationalities by perceiving them as a tactical, dialectical response to the harsh realities of the political system. This would help us capture the essential dynamic and transformative aspects of the movement. Any social movement, and for that matter, environmental movements are characterized by the presence of agencies and structural components, which, however, are not a priori and static. They are rather dynamic and get changed and transformed in the course of the movement. Precisely for this r...

A disturbance to the geo-ecology of a region jeopardizes the livelihood resources of the population and creates pressures for livelihood security. Human interventions in the form of destruction of forests and degradation of land significantly alter the geo-ecology of a region. Moreover, interventions with forests result in several other forms of degradations of the geo-ecology of a region. In the light of this understanding, the present study evaluates the impact of tea plantations on the geo-ecology of Darjeeling Hills, Inia and the consequent impact on the livelihood security of the people in the region.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/hn.v10i0.7104 Hydro Nepal Vol.10 January 2012 53-59
