SERGIO ALCAMO - BIOGRAFIA
L’arte, in tutte le sue forme ed espressioni, è la passione più grande della mia vita. Sono nato in un territorio ricco di storia, opere d’arte e monumenti di grande valore (dai parchi archeologici di Segesta, Selinunte e Agrigento alle numerose chiese arabo normanne, romanico-gotiche, rinascimentali e barocche, adorne di mosaici, stucchi, affreschi, quadri e statue, arredi lignei e oreficerie), esperienze immersive e stimoli visivi e culturali straordinari e fondamentali per la mia crescita.
Ho ricevuto una formazione cattolica che delle opere d’arte - oltre all’aspetto religioso, taumaturgico e salvifico - metteva in risalto tutti quegli attributi e simboli indispensabili a distinguere questo da quel santo: bagaglio culturale che negli anni è stato l’humus fertile sul quale far germogliare il mio interesse per l’iconografia e l’iconologia.
Dopo la laurea in Lettere moderne con indirizzo artistico a Palermo e la specializzazione in Storia dell’arte medievale e moderna a La Sapienza di Roma ho iniziato a interessarmi a molteplici argomenti: primo tra tutti il pittore Giorgio da Castelfranco detto Giorgione (sul quale, in seguito, ho pubblicato, alcuni articoli in riviste specialistiche e due testi monografici per Donzelli Editore, mentre un terzo è in preparazione) e poi lo scultore rinascimentale lombardo Cristoforo Solari detto il Gobbo.
I miei studi e le mie ricerche, accompagnati dall’indagine bibliografica e archivistica, hanno affrontato argomenti assai differenti tra loro, tutti accomunati da qualche nuova scoperta: dall’arte medievale (Castello dell’Imperatore a Prato), alla scultura e alla pittura rinascimentali (Giorgione e Solari), alla grafica del XVIII secolo (disegno con la veduta di Trapani del Museo Pepoli) e del XIX secolo (matrici in rame ottocentesche a Castelvetrano e tele a soggetto sacro del pittore palermitano Luigi Lojacono).
Un posto a parte occupa l’arte siciliana, in special modo la pittura, che amo particolarmente e che vorrei studiare approfonditamente. Sarebbe mio desiderio, infatti, scrivere una monografia sulla bistrattata scuola pittorica trapanese dal 1500 al 1900, in particolar modo per rendere giustizia a quella schiera infinita di ‘anonimi’ e ‘ignoti’ che campeggiano sui cartellini di chiese, palazzi e talvolta anche dei musei. A questo proposito curo un BLOG personale dal titolo Spigolature di arte siciliana nel quale inserisco notizie su artisti e opere poco affrontati in letteratura (anche qui con qualche scoperta inedita) e ho redatto alcuni articoli per il Magazine on-line ‘Le vie dei Tesori’ rivista dell’omonima associazione culturale.
La possibilità di studiare a Roma e di vivere per un certo periodo di tempo prima in Toscana (Orbetello) e poi in Piemonte (Torino) e, grazie alla musica classica, i lunghi soggiorni a Milano e Venezia e i viaggi in Italia e all’estero, mi hanno permesso di visitare moltissimi musei e gallerie: dalle tante istituzioni romane (Palazzo Venezia, Musei Capitolini, Palazzo Doria-Pamphili, Galleria Borghese, ecc.) ai Musei Vaticani, dagli Uffizi a Capodimonte, dal sistema museale veneziano (Gallerie dell’Accademia, Correr, Ca’ d’Oro, ecc.) a quello torinese (Palazzo Reale, Galleria Sabauda, Armeria, Biblioteca Reale, Museo Archeologico,Palazzo Madama) e le diverse regge e residenze sabaude (Venaria Reale, Stupinigi, Racconigi, Agliè, Villa della Regina, Palazzo Carignano, ecc.), a quello milanese (Palazzo Reale, Museo del Duomo, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Museo Diocesano, Poldi Pezzoli, ecc), dalla Pinacoteca di Bologna alla Pilotta a Parma, alla Carrara di Bergamo, alla Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria e, ovviamente, a Palazzo Abatellis, sede della Galleria Regionale della Sicilia. In Europa ho visitato le sale del Prado e del Thyssen-Bornemisza, del Louvre e del Museo d'Orsay, del Van Gogh Museum, del Museo di Bilbao, il castello di Ambras ad Innsbruck, il Castello Sanssouci di Potsdam, a New York il Metropolitan Museum, il Guggenheim e la Frick Collection.
Tanti altri ho omesso dall’elenco, quelli meno celebri e meno imponenti, ma non per questo meno ricchi di opere straordinarie.
Tuttavia, ciò che ancor più mi appassiona - e che cerco di portare avanti con dedizione e studio in biblioteca e in archivio -, è riportare all’attenzione figure di artisti e opere d’arte che per un motivo o per un altro sono stati trascurati dalla storiografia, per risarcire non solo la loro memoria ma per ricostituire altresì le lacune del tessuto storico-artistico di un determinato territorio.

mulieribus claris' di Giovanni Boccaccio illustrato con 104 xilografie di immagini di donne famose dell'antichità.
Nessuno finora si era mai accorto che i loro modelli sono statue e rilievi dello scultore milanese Cristoforo Solari detto il Gobbo e dei fratelli veneziani Tullio e Antonio Lombardo che adornano il celebre monumento funebre al doge Andrea Vendramin.
Si conservano in due prestigiose istituzioni museali degli Stati Uniti d’America, il MIA (Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota) e l’ARTIC (The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois), e recano nel recto e nel verso soggetti sacri. Attribuiti in passato ad artisti diversi (come il senese Francesco Vanni (1564-1610), per quello di Chicago, o il siciliano Pietro Novelli detto “il Monrealese” (1603-1647), per l’altro) oggi figurano entrambi correttamente sotto il nome del D’Asaro ma sono stati trascurati dagli studiosi dell'artista.
Ad esclusione di Emanuele Antonio Cicogna, finora il nome del diarista non era mai stato messo in rapporto con l’Alvise dei sunnominati documenti, di cui invece era il fratellastro.
Al momento non sappiamo se quest’ultimo abbia commissionato qualche opera al pittore di Castelfranco. Dato che non è ricordato per particolari inclinazioni letterarie o per il collezionismo di opere d’arte, ci si è interrogati se questo rapporto di conoscenza diretta col pittore possa essere stato utilizzato e sfruttato in termini di commissioni artistiche da parte di Marino, qui indagato nella sua veste meno nota di intenditore e collezionista di opere d’arte. Sebbene non siano emersi documenti a riguardo, la conoscenza da parte di quest’ultimo di artisti e personaggi che furono a stretto contatto con Giorgione suggeriscono in via ipotetica che almeno un rapporto di conoscenza ci fu, andando a contraddire il suo silenzio sulla figura del pittore, mai nominato nei Diari, che alla luce di quanto emerso appare davvero anomalo.
Marino fu, ad esempio, in buoni rapporti con Giovanni Battista Egnazio e Antonio Marsilio, conoscitori della sua biblioteca e nominati nel testamento, che a loro volta erano stati in contatto anche con il pittore Vincenzo Catena (1475 ca. - 1531) il “cholega” di Giorgione. Ed era imparentato per parte di madre con Zuan Antonio Venier, proprietario di un dipinto del pittore di Castelfranco, a sua volta in contatto con altri due proprietari di opere di Giorgione, Taddeo Contarini ed Andrea Odoni. Anche un suo cugino, Marco Sanudo, personaggio estremamente affascinante e al quale era molto legato, doveva possedere un carisma non comune: fu in ottimi rapporti con molte delle personalità che hanno avuto un peso notevole nella svolta culturale della Venezia tra Quattro e Cinquecento, e delle quali spesso fu destinatario di opere e componimenti (Luca Pacioli; Franchino Gaffurio; Niccolò Leonico Tomeo, in contatto con l’incisore Giulio Campagnola, forse sodale di Giorgione in alcune sue opere; Alessandro Leopardi; Luca e Pomponio Gaurico; frate Francesco Zorzi; Bernardo e Pietro Bembo; Giovanni Aurelio Augurello, ai cui Sermones sembra in parte ispirato il Fregio di Castelfranco, amico anche di Marsilio Ficino e del cardinale Domenico Grimani).
Pure in questo caso, in assenza di prove documentarie, sono le frequentazioni comuni a lasciar ipotizzare che Marco Sanudo, forse più di Marino, potrebbe essere stato un possibile contatto di Giorgione.
Volgendo lo sguardo ad altri esponenti della famiglia Sanudo, se ne è potuta percepire l’importanza non solamente politica e sociale rivestita dai suoi diversi rappresentanti, ma anche il loro ruolo di protagonisti in diverse discipline (storia, matematica, astrologia, geografia, musica). Alcuni furono anche committenti di opere d’arte e sicuramente in contatto con artisti di fama (Vittore Carpaccio), aspetto, questo, fino ad ora trascurato dagli studi.
