For the last few months I’ve been working on a database application to help me catalog and organize all my comics. I don’t have a huge collection, but I’ve had so many comics over the years, sold them off, and then re-purchased some, that I keep forgetting what I have right now. So, an easily-searchable database felt like a great solution. The app, which I’m calling LongBox, is being developed in FileMaker, and I’m hoping to make it available as Shareware sometime in the next couple months.
The initial release will be a Personal Edition, aimed at individuals like me, who just want to keep their own comics organized. The database stores all kinds of information about each individual Issue, including the credited Creators, the Series it’s a part of, the Publisher, and even how many copies of each issue you have, and where they’re stored. You can add Tags to each issue, or put them into user-defined Sets. Eventually I’d also like to put it out for retailers to use, to help track their inventory and make it easier to put their back issue catalogs online.

As I near the end of the initial development cycle, I’m going to be accepting beta testers to help get me over the finish line. You’ll get a free copy of the finished app, of course, and I’ll be there for support and help. Just get in touch and let me know you’re interested!
