The EOLES (Electronics and Optics e-Learning for Embedded Systems) course consists of a 3rd year ... more The EOLES (Electronics and Optics e-Learning for Embedded Systems) course consists of a 3rd year Bachelor degree that relies exclusively on e-learning and remote laboratories, developed as the result of an EU funded ERASMUS+ project, involving 15 institutions from four European and three North African countries and concluded in 2015. The developed course was accredited as a specialization year in most partner institutions and has been running non-stop since then, mainly with students from North African institutions. Although no longer supported by an EU project, the course is a good example of sustainability as it already had 4 effective editions with successful approval rates and always with many more candidates than available vacancies. Motiva este estudio, la instalación de un Laboratorio Remoto VISIR en la Universidad Nacional de Santiago del Estero. Argentina, puesto a disposición de las instituciones de nivel superior y media técnica de la ciudad de Santiago del Estero y con la posibilidad de brindar un servicio del más alto nivel, ajustado a las limitaciones del laboratorio remoto. The proposed solution relies on a synthesized embedded system to provide network data transfer and control capabilities, for use with synthesizable electronic devices. Most TCP/IP stack services and protocols were implemented and the design is flexible to allow adaptation and/or expansion for different application scenarios. Currently this platform is being used on the development of a FPGA based JTAG controller, with remote access. The main goals of this paper are to present and disseminate the educational activities carried ou... more The main goals of this paper are to present and disseminate the educational activities carried out in Higher and Medium Education in Santiago del Estero (Argentina) to provide remote access to electrical and electronics practices using remote laboratories, specifically VISIR (Virtual Instruments System In Reality), on the framework of the VISIR+ project, and the Erasmus Plus PILAR project granted by the European Union. This study shows the first data obtained after deploying several practical circuits, which shows the acceptance of the concept and the use of the VISIR remote laboratory, proceeding step by step to increase the use of the circuit for common purposes and potentially new purposes in several institutions (High and Medium Education) in the Northern part of Argentina, having as center Santiago del Estero. The data and results obtained show the feasibility of the preliminary use of the remote laboratory within those institutions.

The particular case of engineering education, and, within it, the more specific subject of experiments with electrical and electronic circuits is presented first, to then discuss the benefits of using remote labs, while considering the three dimensions of sustainable development, i.e.: economic practice, environmental protection, and social integration. The paper debates how remote labs address each dimension.

This positive step forward creates important difficulties for universities forced to handle overcrowded classes.
