y the time this issue sees winter, my journey from student intern to Fashion Director and Founder|Owner will have taken every bit of the last 10 years. I know that everyone gets sentimental during a big anniversary, but this one has me feeling all of the feels. It dragged me, picked me up, wiped me off, shined me up, then dropped me several more times—and I think we can all agree that 2020 has been one for the books. This particular decade is special because it ignited my first fashion job, pushed me into the industry, and planted me in the Kansas City fashion community. Most days, I look down at my shoes (they aren’t Gucci, by any means), flip through this very magazine with my freshly painted nails, and give gratitude out loud, “You’re the luckiest gal.” I really do remember when I prayed for the things I have now. Not material things. But I prayed prayers for something I’d be proud of—for the hustle to find it. The Local Fashion Link team and I have established a business that helps others. We have succeeded at opening doors. Sometimes the best drive comes from hearing: “You won’t make it past the dressing rooms of Wal-Mart with a fashion degree.” We’re definitely not on, “Look mom, I made it!” status, but we’re resting in the thought that what we put into the world is definitely given back. As I think back from my intern days until now, through countless images that were created by wonderful photographers, endless hours of pulling garments from awesome local shops, dedicated hair and makeup teams putting in work, fresh model faces, and OG models—this is my thanks to 10 years of every single one of you who said “yes.” So many places and experiences gather in my mind—dirt roads that lead to nowhere, vintage, beautiful mansions and hotels, weathered locations, places that made me feel swankier than I’ll ever really be, long drives, a million pieces of jewelry, and the push to always chase the next cover shot. What a wonderful, life-changing decade. This seems like the perfect Local Fashion Link issue to display the best KC fashion for a personal 10-year anniversary. I tried my hardest to gather pieces of the past decade of shoots and incorporate them here, in this edition. You’ll see a new spread, with so much color, that

reminds me of one of my favorites—my first color pop shoot, and because I am sentimental, now they’re both shot by photographer Nicole Bissey. You’ll see a bit of dark and moody-ness which, drew inspiration from a previous shoot that was 90s, dark and chic. You’ll see some soda fountain love, which reminds me of so many locations I’ve been blessed to style in during this decade, getting to know some amazing small business owners. They remind me to keep it up. For them. For us. For the city. Kansas City has been put ON THE MAP, people. A seemingly ordinary city has exploded into a place that others love to be. We have champion sports teams, really good food, special makers and shops—people recognize our name, and now recognize fashion that is here, or that began here. So, when I flip through these pages, and speak gratitude and luck into the air, know that it’s because I get to go through this awesome human experience, here, in this city, with you. We have poured our souls into this issue. If this issue were a meal, it would be the exact one that tastes like home. We aren’t holding back with this one, and we hope to see you around town in all of these looks this year, even if it’s just a photo on social media. We hate that we might not see you in person soon, and if we do, it will be from 6 feet away and wearing a mask, but we’re doing our best in a worldwide pandemic, striving to stand up for human rights with you, listen to science for a healthier world, and hold onto hope for our future. We miss you, KC. Cheers to the next 10 years. For the love of fashion,

XCalli

visit to Lucia’s Sarto in the West Plaza is more than just dropping off a garment for alterations. It’s a glimpse into a couture fashion show. The front windows and walls of Nataliya Meyer’s shop are filled with past runway collections, each telling a story. Her exquisite custom gowns made here in Kansas City are comparable to the large fashion houses in New York City, London, Paris, and Italy. As Nataliya says, she likes elaborate, memorable, and complicated designs. Ask anyone who has been fortunate enough to wear, or own one of her garments, and they might tell you it’s a transformative experience. Nataliya’s garments each have a vision and a story behind them. These garments featured, are from a past collection created around the concept of a starry Western night. The fringe details, glittery star appliques, and black luxurious fabrics evoke the magical noir vibes we love.

n a bright sunny day, pop into Clinton’s Soda Fountain on the Independence Square. The whirling motor from the old-fashioned blender mixes up a red velvet milkshake and the colorful bottles of Polly’s Pop shimmer in the window. Behind the 100-year-old marble countertop you can envision former President Harry S. Truman when he was a soda jerk during his first job as a teenager. We think this dapper man who owned a haberdashery in downtown KC would have appreciated a fashion magazine taking over his favorite soda fountain. While 79Roze Dress Shop in Olathe, Kansas, is known for their selection of perfect LBD’s for any size woman, particularly plus-sized, one should never be afraid to wear a bold pop of color. Accessorizing with a fun vintage straw bag adds the twist of whimsy to these looks.

estled in a quaint space in historic downtown Lee’s Summit is Hand in Glove. A unique coffee shop and artisan cocktail bar is the perfect place to escape either day or night with friends or to treat yourself. Walking into the space you are greeted by the cool white tones from the imported marble, the sleek red bar stools, and a modern yet sophisticated chandelier. The timelessness of vintage blouses and vintage jewelry pieces is a statement much like the setting Hand in Glove creates. Curating garments in your closet from vintage finds that show the test of time is a practical and current trend in eco-friendly fashion. Pair vintage blouses with your favorite jeans for your coffee run or dress them up with a skirt for a night out with the girls.
